Class 5 son wants a note to skip PE. Turns out a boy has started calling him 'motu'

bronze_diary_2872

On Tuesday he asked if I could write a note so he could skip PE 'for a few weeks'. It took two days to get the reason out of him. A boy in his new section has started calling him motu, the others laugh, and PE is where it happens most. He has always loved games. Now he says he hates running. I want to march into the school, and I know that's probably the worst thing I could do for him. If this has happened to your child, what did you do?

Skipping PE gives the boy who said it exactly what he wanted. I'd tell the class teacher, quietly, now. Names like that stick fast if nobody stops them in the first few weeks.

Our son had something similar around that age, about his height. What helped was not making it a big talk at home. We told the teacher, and separately found him one thing in PE he was good at, which for him was throwing. Is there a friend in his section who would stand with him? That mattered more for our son than anything the adults did.

I'd tell the teacher, but ask him first how he wants it done. Our older girl begged us not to go to school when something like this happened, because she thought it would get worse if anyone knew she'd told. We sent a note to the teacher instead of going in, which she could live with. It was slower, but she trusted us with the next thing.
