Visiting my nephew's new baby. Is gold still expected, or do young parents prefer something useful?

My nephew and his wife had a baby girl last month, their first. In our family we have always given a small gold chain or bangles for the cradle ceremony. At home I am told that young parents now find gold a bit old-fashioned and would rather have something they can use. I don't want to bring something that goes into a locker and is forgotten, but I also don't want my sister thinking I have been stingy. What did you appreciate receiving when your little ones were born?

Honestly the gifts I remember are the practical ones. Someone paid for a month of a massage lady, someone else sent home-cooked food for a week. Gold I appreciated later, but in those first weeks food mattered more. Maybe a small piece plus something useful?

The food one, yes. Nobody brought us meals and I still remember that. A small gold piece plus a week of food covers both sides of the family.

A week of meals is a lovely idea, and I can do that myself, I still cook for a crowd. Thank you both.

home-cooked food from an aunt who cooks for a crowd is the best gift there is. my aunt did that for us and i still think about her pulihora
