Class 10 daughter studying past midnight. Worth raising the workload with school?

indigo_drum_7316

My daughter is in class 10 (CBSE) and since the mid-terms she's been up till 12.30 or 1 most nights. Every reminder from us to sleep turns into an argument. Her version is that she has no choice: school homework, the weekly tests and her tuition worksheets simply add up to that much. I'm not looking for another study plan. We've been down that road and it becomes one more thing to fight about ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ PTM is in a couple of weeks. I'm thinking of asking the class teacher how much daily work the school expects in board year, so we know whether the problem is the load or how the evening gets used. Has anyone asked this directly? Did the school take it as a fair question, or did it come across as a complaint?

  • My daughter did class 10 two years ago, ICSE, and the late nights started around this time of year for us too. We asked at the PTM in more or less the words you've used. The teacher was not offended at all. She went through which assignments were meant to be done in full and which were practice that could be skimmed, and that cut close to an hour on some days. It did nothing about the tuition worksheets. Those we had to take up with the tuition teacher separately, and that conversation was harder.

Our son is younger, so not board year. One thing that helped when we talked to his teachers: for one week we noted what came home each day and roughly how long each piece took, and carried that list to the meeting. It moved the conversation from 'he seems overloaded' to specific items, and the teachers responded to the specifics. A week of notes is enough.
