Grade 4 son has worked out how to farm points on the school's maths app

gentle_chai_3364

His school uses a maths practice app for homework, with points and badges. He's been doing brilliantly, or so I thought. I sat next to him this week and saw why: he picks the easiest level, races through it in seconds and repeats it. The harder sets he opens, gets one question wrong, and closes. Technically the homework is done. The summary the teacher sees shows lots of time and lots of points. I'm on calls most evenings so I can't watch every session. Do I tell the teacher, set my own rule at home, or let it go since it's only practice?

My grandson is only two, but I see the same thing with the children in our building, they find the shortcut in every game. If it is on the phone or tablet, even studies become a game for them. I would sit with him at least two days in the week, even ten minutes. Children work differently when an elder is watching.

  • Ask the teacher what the app reports to her. Most of these platforms record the level and accuracy, not only time and points, but teachers often look at the summary alone. If she can see which level he picks, the problem may solve itself. At home, a rule like 'one hard set before any easy ones' is simple to check from the history without sitting beside him.

the history part is key. my daughter's app had a history tab and the shortcuts stopped the week she knew I'd looked at it

Can you lock the level from the parent side? Some of these apps allow it.
