Maths workbook has the answers printed at the back, and he's found them

jade_compass_1184

The school sent a summer workbook for class 7 maths, around fifty pages, with answers at the back for 'self-checking'. Our son discovered them on day two. He now finishes a page in four minutes, every answer correct, no working anywhere. I review this kind of material for a living, and I can see exactly why the answers are there. As his mother I'd like to tear those pages out. He says the school gave them to him, so using them isn't cheating. He has a point, which annoys me. Did you let it go, or set a rule?

We had the same with my son's English workbook last year. I didn't remove the answers. I asked him to cover them, do five questions, then check, and write the reason for any wrong one in the margin. It only half worked. But those margin notes told me more about what he didn't understand than his report card did.

As a teacher I'd say he's half right ❤️ The answers are there for checking, so after he finishes a page, pick any three questions and ask him to show you the working. If he can explain them, the answers did their job. If he can't, he'll start writing the working himself, because that's easier than being caught out.

Tried the 'any three questions' idea since Friday. First day he couldn't explain two of them and was quite offended. Since then the working has started appearing on the page without me saying a word. No complaints about it either, which is suspicious.

      Replying to @jade_compass_1184

Suspicious is right 🤷 Enjoy it while it lasts. Mine went through the same phase in class 7 and it held till about the first unit test.
