my 7 year old has been checking on the idli batter every hour like it's a patient

i told her the batter 'grows' overnight. she's now lifting the lid every hour with a torch and reporting back. 'it's thinking.' 'it moved.' 'it's sleeping again.' it's barely risen because of the weather, so she's decided it's sad and has been talking to it. we may be having dosa for lunch instead.

This is a science lesson my class would never sit still for. Next step: one spoon of batter in a clear glass with a rubber band at the level. She can watch it climb, or not climb.

'It's thinking' 😄 My mother does the same thing every winter, wraps the vessel in a towel and keeps it near the stove. Your daughter is just more polite about it.

she's now asking for a towel for it. also wants to know if it gets cold at night

Monsoon batter here in Bangalore has the same mood problem. My mother-in-law keeps it inside the switched-off oven with only the light on. Your daughter will want to sit next to the oven, I'm warning you.

At that age mine named our curd setting 'the experiment'. She's nearly 15 and is still the one who checks whether the curd has set.

Late to this, but did the batter cheer up? We have a baby and I can already see this happening in our kitchen in about six years.
