0on Would one year at Maples in Kukatpally be worth it for a 12 year old who wants a fresh start?
We had the relatives problem with marks rather than looks. What I learnt is that a child notices whether the parent says something in the room, more than what exactly is said. At the next function, saying 'we don't comment on his face' in front of him may matter more than which school he's in. No experience with Maples, sorry.
0on 17 year old wants to revise at a paid study library till 10 pm
Could you try a quiet corner at home for these two weeks first? If her brother is the main problem, a closed door and an earlier dinner for him might solve it without the late evenings.
4on How much should a 13 year old help with her baby brother?
Ours are four years apart rather than thirteen. Still, what helped was making the asks specific and limited. 'Can you watch him for twenty minutes while I'm on this call' got a much better response than a general expectation that she would pitch in. And thanking her as if it were a favour, even when that felt a bit silly.
Our son had the same complaint in class 6 and 7 at his school. The computer period was once a week and a good part of it was notes for the exam, definitions to learn and so on. He found it dull, but it didn't stop him learning on his own. What helped him more was a coding club that ran after school one afternoon a week, which not every school has. Does your son want the school to teach him, or mainly to not get in his way? Those lead to quite different shortlists.
3on Class 6 entrance tests: what do they test, and when do they happen?
When we looked at options for my son around that age, the tests were mostly English comprehension and maths pitched about one class below the entry class, plus a short conversation with the child. One school asked him to write a paragraph about himself. None of them went chapter by chapter through the class 5 syllabus. Most held the tests between November and February for the following June. Have you asked whether any of them have a sports trial? With his reason for moving, that might count for something.
0on A boy from her tuition has started dropping our 17 year old home on his bike
That was my first thought too. If he is under 18, it settles the question without anyone having to be the villain. If he is 18, then the helmet is the conversation.
0on Class 4 notebooks come back with ticks and nothing else. Is that the usual practice now?
My daughter is in class 4 as well, and her teacher does the same in some subjects. When I asked at the PTM, she said wrong answers are discussed on the board the next day and the children are supposed to correct their own books. Most don't. So I'd ask whether there's a correction step the children are meant to do, before assuming there isn't one.
2on Is it usual for a degree college to hold on to the original certificates for all three years?
No experience with this yet, but one practical point a friend gave me: ask for a signed receipt that lists each document by name. If they do keep them, you at least have proof of exactly what was handed over.
That matches what happened with my son's class 7 books. Two titles had changed, so the set was useless as a set, but a boy in our block took the atlas and the grammar workbook on their own. Sorting the pile against the current list took one evening and saved a lot of carrying around.
2on every summer camp teacher has decided my 8 yr old is 'very talented'
Something that helped us decide was asking each teacher what a child gets out of the first three months, specifically. The chess teacher who could tell us what our daughter would be able to do by October got the slot. The ones who said she will develop did not. Does your son have a favourite among the three, or does he say yes to everything?
0on Son found my old engineering entrance rank card and asked if he 'has to' do the same
Our son is the same age, and in a whole year we've had one useful conversation about the future. It was in the car and he started it. Questions at the dinner table got 'I don't know' every time. History and invented maps is a lovely combination. Does he like the stories or the places? That might tell you more than any aptitude test would.
6on Class 5 son wants a note to skip PE. Turns out a boy has started calling him 'motu'
Our son had something similar around that age, about his height. What helped was not making it a big talk at home. We told the teacher, and separately found him one thing in PE he was good at, which for him was throwing. Is there a friend in his section who would stand with him? That mattered more for our son than anything the adults did.
0on she wants to turn down her job offer and give civil services a year. i don't know what to say
I hire freshers at work, and I would gently point out that a one-year gap for exam preparation is very easy to explain in an interview later. Nobody I know would hold it against a candidate. The offer feels like the only one now, but at her stage there will be others. The part I would discuss with her is the date by which she decides. Make sure that date is written down and agreed before she starts.
6on Class 9 starts in three weeks and my son has been rehearsing a 'new me' in the bathroom mirror
Tone number two is the one that lasts. Our son unveiled his version in class 8 and it survived until the first PT period, when he tripped over a cone in front of everyone.
We went to one last year when our son was in class 8, mostly out of curiosity. About twenty minutes of general information on streams, which was fine, and then a long session on their foundation course with forms on every chair. If you go, go for the first part and decide beforehand that you won't sign anything that day.
1on Caregiver starts next week. Do we put a camera in the living room, and do we tell her?
We never had a camera, so take this as one view. What told me the most, years back, was coming home early unannounced once or twice in the first month and seeing how she was with the children. A camera shows you the room. It does not tell you whether she will call you when something goes wrong.
1on Every evening around 6, our son cries for an hour and nothing we try changes it
My son had an evening crying hour as a baby; my daughter never did. Walking him up and down the balcony was the only thing that seemed to work, and I'm not sure it did more than make us feel useful. If your doctor is happy, I would mainly make sure you and your partner take turns, so one of you gets that hour off.
Our children's school prints only the first name and an admission number on the front; the address and contact details are on the back, inside a fold. It changed after a parent raised it at a PTM. Worth asking at your daughter's school, it isn't a big change for them to make.
My sister is a teacher and has the same May problem every year. She takes the stretch when results and records are being finished, when she's needed for only a couple of hours a day, and works from her in-laws' place for that week. Is any part of your May lighter like that, even for three or four days?
