Is it usual for a degree college to hold on to the original certificates for all three years?

Our daughter has taken a seat at a degree college in the city, and the admission checklist says the original class 10 and 12 certificates and the transfer certificate are to be deposited with the college until the course is completed. I understand they need to verify them. My doubt is whether keeping them for three years is standard or something we can question. She may want to apply for an internship or an exchange programme in between, and those sometimes ask for originals too. For those whose children went through this recently: did the college keep the originals, return them after verification, or keep only the TC? I would like to know what is normal before I speak to the office.

No experience with this yet, but one practical point a friend gave me: ask for a signed receipt that lists each document by name. If they do keep them, you at least have proof of exactly what was handed over.

When I joined my MBA programme they kept the originals for about six weeks for verification and returned everything except the TC. That was a while ago and it varies a lot by college, but it is worth asking whether 'deposit' means verification only. Get attested photocopies made before you hand anything over.

Noting this. Son's in 11th, so we're not far behind. Didn't know colleges could hold them for 3 years
