0on Last Diwali an elder called my son fat in front of everyone. What do I say this time?
Fair. It's mainly one aunt on my in-laws' side, a kaku, and once it was my own aai, about his skin getting dark from cricket. Kaku I can probably handle with a line. With aai I don't know what I'd say in front of everyone.
0on 9 year old wants the competitive swim group. Coach says not yet
The real cost is the evenings. If the squad trains five days till 7.30, dinner and homework move to after 8. Try a week on that schedule at home before next term and see if she still wants it.
2on Left her sleep cloth at a restaurant on Tuesday. Two nights of chaos so far
Lost teddy on a train, that was us, at about the same age. Three bad nights, then he picked a pillow of all things and that settled it. They move on sooner than it feels at 2 am.
0on Has anyone's child moved from ICSE to Goldcrest in Gachibowli around class 8?
My son's in CBSE, class 7. Two boys joined his class this year from ICSE schools. From what I've seen at the PTMs, they were ahead of the class in English writing, and maths was more or less level. One of them found Hindi harder than anything else because he'd done it differently before.
1on At work I tell parents to stop checking the school portal daily. I check my daughter's every night
I stopped logging in on weekdays and kept only Sunday evening, when we look at it together. The first month he missed two things and got a remark in his diary. After that he started asking for my phone to check on his own. Not every week, but more than before.
2on 16 year old has lost three days running at society badminton to an uncle in chappals
Those uncles have played on the same court for thirty years. They know every corner of it. Your son never stood a chance in week one.
0on Does Kakatiya Techno School in Vanasthalipuram ever let colony children use its ground on Sundays?
Our colony tried this with a school in Kukatpally a few years ago. They said yes, but only if an adult signed a register and stayed the whole time. Go to the principal directly, not the watchman.
0on Rain day turned into an online class at our place. How closely do you supervise a 7 year old?
Sit in the same room with your own work, not beside him. Close enough to see the screen. Mine always did better with that than with someone watching every move.
0on Coach keeps one boy with leg braces on the bench every match. My 7 year old asked me why
I'd ask the coach, but as a question, not a complaint. Something like 'my son asked me this and I didn't know what to tell him.' My son's cricket academy had a boy who bowled fewer overs than the rest, and it turned out his doctor had asked for it. Nobody knew because nobody asked.
2on our helper puts a woolly cap on the 4 month old every evening. it's 33 degrees
Our son's grandmother was exactly like this, monkey cap in May. What finally worked was asking her to feel the back of his neck instead of his hands. If the neck was sweaty, the cap came off. She accepted the neck test much more easily than she accepted me.
1on No phuchka till the rains ease. Both boys say I'm overreacting
In our house it's the other way round. My partner stops at every chaat cart on the way home, so I lost the moral high ground years ago. Our 11 year old still asks before he buys anything outside, so we haven't had your fight yet. Give it a year.
2on Ten days of exam valuation duty from next Monday, and nobody home when the van drops him
The ask-a-week-before part is true outside universities too. Festival rosters at our store go to whoever asks first and most specifically. I'd send a second mail with the exact dates and times rather than 'some days'.
2on Second opinion on braces for our 11 year old, around Tellapur or Gachibowli?
My son was told the same at 10 at a clinic in Kukatpally. We went to a dental college OPD for the second opinion. Long wait, but nobody selling anything. They said wait a year until more of the adult teeth were in. Worth the morning.
0on He passed the repeat hearing test, and I still clap behind his head every evening
My son is 10 and I still check whether he's heard me when I call him for dinner. Usually he hasn't. Different problem.
