1on Anyone been through LKG admission at Centenary Baptist Church High School in Marredpally?
For my younger one's nursery admission earlier this year (a different school, ICSE) it was about ten minutes. She was given blocks and a picture book while a teacher watched, and most of the questions were for us: who drops her, what she eats, whether she'd been to a playschool. She spent half the time telling the teacher about our neighbour's dog. It didn't feel like a test in any real sense. I'm sure it varies from school to school, so it's worth asking them directly.
0on Our class 2 son holds it all day rather than use the school toilet
My elder one did exactly this in class 1. It turned out the older girls used the same block at break and she felt rushed and watched. Once the teacher let her go five minutes before break, when it was empty, it stopped within a couple of weeks. Do ask if he can go at a quieter time. They usually come round once the reason is found.
0on I mentor PhD students, and I can't get my 12 year old to stop highlighting entire pages
That is oddly reassuring. Two more years of yellow pages, then ♥ I may quietly try the closed-book question in the meantime.
2on Moving from ICSE to State Board for class 10. Is that even done? Looking at Quantums in Bowenpally
Before anything else, I'd sit with her report and find out if it is really the number of subjects, or one or two subjects dragging everything. With my elder girl it turned out to be history and civics only, all those dates. Once we sorted out how she revised those, the 'drowning' feeling went down a lot. Not saying that's your case, but worth checking first.
1on Relatives say start cow's milk at 10 months. Our doctor said wait till one
Oh, the lectures. With my younger one it was ghee in everything from four months, according to my aunt. What helped was having one sentence ready, "the doctor is checking this at the next visit", and repeating it every single time. And I'd have a quiet word with your caregiver directly, so she knows whose instructions she's following ♥
3on 13 year old wants a second piercing in each ear, and my partner says it's my call
The ten-year debate sounds familiar. I finally went ahead in the summer holidays, and the higher hole took far longer to settle than my first ones ever did, mostly from catching on hair ties and dupattas. So for the original question, I'd time it for a long holiday rather than a school week.
1on class 10 extra classes, 3.30 to 5.30 every day from this week
My elder is two years away from this, so I'm reading carefully. One thing I'd look at is what she eats between dismissal and the extra classes. Lunch at half past twelve and dinner at seven is a very long stretch on a day like that, and a proper snack at 3.30 might help more than whatever you drop ❤️
1on third water bottle lost since june. does any school actually run a lost and found
Oh, the bottles! At my elder one's school the lost property turned out to be a cupboard in the PE room that nobody mentions. Worth asking the sports teacher or the ayah rather than the class teacher. For bottle number four, a cheap plastic one with her name scratched into the side, not a sticker. Stickers come off in the first wash. It does get better, my elder one stopped losing things somewhere around class 6 ❤️
2on Daughter is in class 10. Do we need to start on class 11 applications now?
My sister did this for my niece last year. What helped her was a short list of four or five places by the end of September, with each one's application month written next to it, and then nothing more until those dates came round. It kept the forms from taking over the whole year ❤️
0on Grandson examined me with his toy stethoscope and prescribed two chocolates after food
This made my morning. My little one does the same with my reading glasses. Every patient needs glasses, including her baby doll and me.
1on First unit test in class 7. Near full marks in everything except social, 9 out of 20
The timeline helps a lot. With my older girl we added one step: at the end of each chapter she says the three names and dates that matter out loud, counts them on her fingers, then checks the book. It took a few weeks to stick ❤
0on What's an ordinary week like for class 5 and 6 at Brilliant Grammar High School in Dilsukhnagar?
Practical point from having two daughters at different stages: if the boys end up in two schools, you get two holiday lists, two PTM days and two sets of exam weeks that never line up. We underestimated that badly. Worth finding out which Saturdays this school works and how its exam weeks fall before you decide. Hope the move works out ❤️
3on Our toddler runs at every street dog in the lane with both arms out
This was our younger one at two. The thing that helped was a calm dog she already knew. A neighbour's old Labrador let her stroke him every evening with us right there, and she learnt the slow way of going up to a dog from him, not from us. After a few weeks she started doing the same with others, still holding our hand ❤️
4on 7 months old and he's found his own voice. Full-volume shrieking, everywhere we go
At that age our little one shrieked at every new face and then laughed at her own noise. She's 3 now and sings at full volume instead, so I'm not sure it ever really stops ❤️
2on Rockwell in Kokapet runs CBSE, IGCSE and IB. How does a family choose one for class 1?
Agree with this. I'd add one more for the visit: ask to see a class 1 reading corner and what a normal week of reading looks like. At that age the reading habit and the teacher matter far more than which board's name is on the report card. And it's lovely that you're going along. Grandparents notice things parents rush past ❤
3on 46 in class 4, and after a week his classwork notebook has one tick in it
Agree that it has to come from several parents. At our elder one's school we also offered something, parent volunteers for reading time, so it didn't sound only like a complaint. The class stayed big, but the conversation went much better ♥
1on Partner's students' parents keep sending gifts for our baby. One was silver
I mentor students and have had parents send things too. What I do: a handwritten thank-you for everything, and for anything costly a polite return saying it is too generous. Nobody has ever been offended ♥
1on Daughter's IB school is a long drive. Is SR Digi School in Kushaiguda realistic for class 8?
My elder girl is in ICSE, which is a different move, but several of her friends came in from IB schools around this age. The hard part for them turned out to be writing long answers by hand in a timed exam, after years of projects and typed work. A few months of practice writing answers at home made a real difference for them. The good news is the IB children tended to be very comfortable speaking up in class ❤️
0on My 11 year old wants to read whatever her 14 year old cousin is reading
Update: asked her about it at lunch, as casually as I could manage. She said the girl was 'silly to leave without a plan'. So perhaps I needn't have worried quite so much ❤
3on My 11 year old wants to read whatever her 14 year old cousin is reading
Talking about it for days is what I'm hoping for. She's been unusually quiet about this one.
3on My 11 year old wants to read whatever her 14 year old cousin is reading
Fair question. I read the back and the first chapter. She runs away to find her father, and so far it seems more sad than dark. I'll read the rest this weekend before I say anything to her.
1on Where do people around Tolichowki buy baking tins and decent cocoa without going to a mall?
Silicone cups are what our older girl started with too, and at ten she still prefers them. And for cocoa, a small packet from the old city shops was miles better than anything at our supermarket ❤️
