First unit test in class 7. Near full marks in everything except social, 9 out of 20

Unit test results came today. Maths, science and English are fine. Social: 9 out of 20. His explanation is that social is 'just stories' and he doesn't see why he has to remember who built what. He knew the stories when I asked him last week. On paper he put the wrong ruler with the wrong fort in three answers and lost a mark for almost every date. How do you make names and dates stick for a kid who likes the story but not the details? How do your kids revise social?

Mine is still in early primary, so I'm answering as the boy who was exactly this in school. History was 'stories' to me too, until one teacher made us write each answer like a newspaper report: headline, what happened, who, when, why it mattered. Suddenly the names and dates had somewhere to go. Baba still teases me about my 4 out of 20 in class 6 🙂

  • the wrong ruler with the wrong fort sounds like it's all one blur in his head. my daughter does better when she draws a timeline first and puts the names on it, then revises from that

The timeline helps a lot. With my older girl we added one step: at the end of each chapter she says the three names and dates that matter out loud, counts them on her fingers, then checks the book. It took a few weeks to stick ❤

Counting on fingers, he'll like that. Will try with the next chapter. Did she do it in the exam also, or only at home?
