0on IB grade 3 to State Board class 4 at Dazzling High School. How do kids handle the first real exams?
We're weighing a school change ourselves, for the commute. What I've realised is that a new school and a new board would land on her at the same time. I'd try to keep one thing familiar through it, maybe her activity or a weekend routine, so not everything is new at once.
0on Would moving from CBSE to State Board in class 7 hurt? Kartikeya High School is close by
We're weighing a move for our 12 year old too, so I've been reading up. Can't speak to Kartikeya. On the board change, what I've heard from two families who did it is that maths and science were manageable and it was the second language that took the most getting used to. One thing I'd ask: what does your son think of the move? In our case the commute argument made perfect sense to us and much less sense to her.
6on My 12 year old's feet overtook mine this summer. My new walking shoes are now 'ours'
Or buy two of the same pair and stop keeping track. That's what we ended up doing with sandals once my older one and I became the same size.
1on Anyone been through LKG admission at Centenary Baptist Church High School in Marredpally?
I haven't applied there, so I can't speak for that school. I've been doing the same round of calls for my younger one this month, and so far two schools had dates fixed and three said to call after Dasara. The front office on the phone was far more useful than the websites, two of which still had last year's notice up. One call before you plan the visit might save you the second trip.
0on IB says our son could do Bengali literature 'self-taught' for the Diploma. Anyone tried this?
We keep circling a version of this with Tamil for our older one, though she is in CBSE and nowhere near an exam yet. Each time the problem is the same: the grandparent is enthusiastic at the start and the hard part comes in the second year, by which point it's the child doing it alone. Not a reason to say no. Just worth asking how much of that second year his thakuma can sit with him.
0on Entrance test for class 6 joiners at St.George Grammer School, Yapral?
Can't speak for this school. When we looked at class 6 moves elsewhere, the tests were English and maths at roughly class 5 level, plus a short chat with the child. Request a sample paper or a topic list from the office. Some schools hand one over, some don't, but the ones that do save you a lot of guessing.
0on Office moving to a campus across town, and my 25 minute commute becomes 75
We have a version of this. My partner does all the mornings, I do all the pickups, and we stopped trying to split each day evenly. It works because each of us owns one fixed half of the day. The cost is that I almost never see the morning side, and our little one is a different child at 7 am. Have you asked about a later start on the new campus? Ours allowed a 10 to 7 shift for people with long commutes, though that only helps if your evenings are covered.
I'd try a softer version first. My daughter's tuition did the same, and when I asked, the teacher said parents had requested it because homework was eating their evenings. When I asked for her to be left out of that half hour, he agreed without any fuss. One conversation sorted it.
3on Badminton academy wants our 11 year old in the 6 am batch, five days a week
The coach says three days won't keep her place, which is the whole difficulty. Bedtime by 9 would be its own fight in our house. Still haven't decided.
0on He crawls up our stairs in seconds now. Gate at the bottom, or teach him to come down feet first?
We did both with our younger one. A gate for when nobody was watching, and practice going down feet first when someone was. It took about three weeks of turning her around on the bottom two steps before she did it on her own. The gate stayed till she was nearly two, because knowing how to come down didn't mean she always chose to.
2on sunday matches at a new ground every week. how do parents share the driving
There is a tradeoff. A rota is fair on paper, but it ties you to a fixed Sunday even when the toddler is unwell. In our elder daughter's group, a couple of families simply paid fuel to whoever drove and swapped freely. Less tidy, more flexible.
1on 2 month old gets hiccups after every single feed
Our younger one had them a lot at that age. Burping her halfway through the feed instead of only at the end reduced them for us, though it never stopped them completely. They were worse on the days she gulped because she was very hungry.
3on Our shop manager lives near Wesley and asked me to find out about nursery at Allen Primary School
I have no experience of Allen, but we are doing nursery enquiries for our younger one this year. The question I keep wishing I had asked at the first few schools is what happens on the mornings a three-year-old cries at the gate: do the teachers take the child in, or send the parent home with them?
0on colony badminton tournament has no kids' category, and my daughter wants to enter doubles with me
My older one played an open event at around that age and lost 21-3, 21-5. She was upset for one evening, then wanted to know how the other pair served. I think it depends on whether she's going for the experience or expecting to win points, and you'd know that better than anyone here. If she's realistic about it, I'd let her play.
1on Early-morning things to do around Banjara Hills with a 7 year old, before it gets too hot
With our elder one at that age we did a 'one new street a week' walk, early, before it got hot. A different lane in an older part of the city each time, looking for one specific thing: a blue door, a cat, a temple bell. It lasted a surprisingly long time. Our little one is too small for it yet.
0on She wrote all her EVS answers on the question paper. School says the marks stand
Agree with not fighting the marks. With my older one we made it into a family joke about 'the most correct wrong paper'. When my little one gets to exams I'll practise once at home first, a pretend paper with a separate answer sheet, so it doesn't happen twice.
