She wrote all her EVS answers on the question paper. School says the marks stand

Class 2 final exams. Our daughter came home very pleased with her EVS paper. Results came yesterday and she has 9 out of 40. Turns out she wrote most of the answers neatly on the question paper, under each question, and left the answer sheet half empty. The teacher showed us both papers. The answers on the question paper are mostly right. School's position is that only the answer sheet is marked, and that was explained before the exams. I understand the rule. I also think she's eight and nobody checked on her during the exam. She's devastated and keeps saying 'but I knew them'. I'm not sure whether to push the school on this or just help her get over it. Did anyone else go through something similar at this age?

I mark exam scripts for a living. Rules about answer sheets exist for good reasons and the school probably won't budge, especially at the end of the year. But it's fair to ask them, politely, whether invigilators in class 2 are asked to check that children are writing in the right place. That's a reasonable question for next year, and it isn't about her marks.

I'd let it go with the school and put the energy into her. At eight what she'll remember is how you reacted, not the 9. My son once wrote an entire maths section in pencil on the back of the sheet in class 2 and lost it. He tells it as a funny story now, at 12, because we laughed about it at the time. Mostly.

Agree with not fighting the marks. With my older one we made it into a family joke about 'the most correct wrong paper'. When my little one gets to exams I'll practise once at home first, a pretend paper with a separate answer sheet, so it doesn't happen twice.

The pretend paper is a good idea, she'd quite enjoy being 'tested' at home. And yes, we've decided not to argue the marks. I've asked the teacher the invigilation question instead, she said she'd raise it.
