3on Coaching centre wants class 12 paid for now, in October of class 11
We were asked for exactly this a few weeks ago for my daughter. I asked for three things in writing before deciding: the weekly timetable for class 12, the refund or transfer terms if she left mid-year, and how the weekend tests would be scheduled around school exams. They gave the first readily, the second only after I asked twice, and the third not at all. We haven't paid. I'd rather lose the 'secured' seat than sign up for something they can't describe.
4on What did you keep in your daughter's school bag before her periods started?
A practical point from our experience: find out what the school's process is, not just who the nurse is. At my daughter's school girls had to ask a class teacher for permission to go to the sick room, and she found that harder than anything else. Once we knew, she arranged with one teacher that a quiet word was enough. It may be worth asking at the session whether there is a simple way for a girl to step out without explaining in front of the class.
2on 8 month old back to waking every two hours. Teeth, standing, or just us?
My daughter is sixteen now, so this is memory rather than advice. We had a similar stretch at about that age, which coincided with her first tooth and with pulling to stand. Our paediatrician's view at the time was to get her ears checked if there was fever, and otherwise to keep the routine steady and wait. It did end, in a few weeks.
1on New school wants a reference from his current class teacher before we've even decided to move
Before asking the current teacher, I would ask the new school whether the reference can be submitted after a provisional offer instead of with the form. Some schools allow it if you explain, some don't. I don't know which this one is, but it costs only an email to find out. When my daughter changed schools in class 8, the new school accepted her last two report cards first and took the teacher's note later. That was one school though, so I wouldn't assume it is standard.
1on Daycare says my daughter has started biting. Twice in a week
My daughter is in high school now, so please weigh this accordingly. She went through a biting stretch at about the same age, and in hindsight it lined up with her wanting things faster than she could ask for them. Once she had a few more words it faded within a couple of months. That is one child's experience, not a rule.
0on Our 13 year old has discovered that 'the baby is sleeping' works on everyone
Give it a year or two. Once the baby can talk, she will be reporting on him, and the balance of power will shift considerably.
2on class 1 bench partners change every monday. so every monday we get a review
At fifteen they move on to reviewing teachers, and the scores get considerably harsher.
My daughter's class 9 card went face-in for a whole term. Then a friend's came back worse, and hers became 'not that bad'. Give it time.
Interesting to read. We stayed ICSE all the way and found the reverse: heavy written work early, so class 9 felt like less of a jump because she was used to it. Both routes seem to work. The load just arrives at a different time.
6on Nanny has been 20 to 40 minutes late four times in two weeks, and my reporting shift starts at 8
In my experience it helps to keep the conversation separate from any particular late day. Years ago we sat down with our helper on a Sunday and talked only about timing: what time she needed to leave home to reach us by 7.30, and whether that was realistic with her own family's morning. It turned out it was not, and we moved her hours by 20 minutes with a slightly later finish. I would not assume carelessness until you know what her morning looks like.
0on Carrier that doesn't wreck a tall dad's back? She's 5 months and heavier every week
Mine is a teenager now, so this is from memory, but the one I used most was the one I could put on and tighten alone, in under a minute. Anything that needed a second pair of hands stayed in the cupboard. I would test that in the shop as much as the fit.
2on 11 yr old wants a proper football coach. Apparently I don't count
Our daughter played in a girls' batch at 11 and 12. What kept her going wasn't the coach, it was having two friends from school in the same batch. The term she went alone she lasted a month. If she has even one friend who'd join, start there.
2on Forty minutes between getting home and bedtime, and both kids want all of them
I only had one, so I can't speak to siblings. My sister used a sand timer for her two at that age, five minutes each, and the kids turned it over themselves. The fighting moved from 'me first' to 'turn it over', which she counted as progress.
1on Vet near Gopanpally who sees hamsters? We're minding the neighbours' for May
When you call, ask whether the doctor has treated a hamster before, rather than whether the clinic 'sees small animals'. Several clinics say yes to the second and mean puppies. I learnt this when a friend's guinea pig fell ill.
3on KG day at Ananda Jyothi High School, Amberpet? We may rent on that side next year
Useful point. I'd also ask whether you choose the board at admission or later. Friends at another school with both boards were asked to choose at nursery, which surprised them.
Speaking from when my daughter was that age, so it has been some years: the things that caught us weren't the obvious ones. Medicines and cleaning liquids on low shelves, mosquito repellent refills plugged in at knee height, and the kitchen drawer with knives. The glass table we simply padded at the corners with folded towels for the fortnight.
