What did you keep in your daughter's school bag before her periods started?

My daughter is 10 and her school has a session coming up for the girls in her grade. We've talked at home, and she seems more curious than worried, which is a relief. Where I'm stuck is the practical side. What did you keep in your daughter's bag before anything had started, and from what age? I'd also like to know who she should go to at school if it happens during the day. I don't want to overload her with gear she'll be embarrassed to carry, but I also don't want her caught out at 11 with nothing.

we kept a small zip pouch in her bag from about 10. pad, spare underwear, a few wipes. it sat there unused for a long time. nobody else knew it was there, which was the point for her

A practical point from our experience: find out what the school's process is, not just who the nurse is. At my daughter's school girls had to ask a class teacher for permission to go to the sick room, and she found that harder than anything else. Once we knew, she arranged with one teacher that a quiet word was enough. It may be worth asking at the session whether there is a simple way for a girl to step out without explaining in front of the class.

I worried I would be the awkward parent in this, since my partner's hours are less flexible than mine and I do most of the school coordination. It turned out my daughter mostly wanted me to buy what was on her list without commentary. I'd suggest letting her choose the pouch and what goes into it, so it feels like her kit rather than something handed to her.

My son is only 2 so I'm not there with a daughter. But I got mine at 11 in school and nobody had told me anything. Spent the whole afternoon terrified. Your girl is lucky you're talking about it already.

Thank you for saying this. I think that's exactly the afternoon I'm trying to avoid for her. Your comment reminded me to tell her that it's fine to just walk to the teacher and say she isn't well.
