Coaching centre wants class 12 paid for now, in October of class 11

Our son's coaching centre called us in this week. He's 16, in class 11 at an ICSE school, and joined them in June for the class 11 portion. They said that the 'serious students' are paying for the class 12 programme now so their batch is secured, and the class 12 batch combines regular classes, weekend tests and a crash course. Nobody is forcing us, but it was presented as the obvious next step. What I'd like to know before paying is how many hours a week the class 12 plan takes, how it fits with his school timetable and board preparation, and what happens if he wants to change after a few months. They answered most of this with 'everyone manages'. Did anyone pay early like this? Did you regret it or was it fine?

We were asked for exactly this a few weeks ago for my daughter. I asked for three things in writing before deciding: the weekly timetable for class 12, the refund or transfer terms if she left mid-year, and how the weekend tests would be scheduled around school exams. They gave the first readily, the second only after I asked twice, and the third not at all. We haven't paid. I'd rather lose the 'secured' seat than sign up for something they can't describe.

My son is in class 11 too, at a different centre, and they've started the same talk. What I did was sit with him and the class 12 timetable they gave us and add up the hours along with school and travel. It came to a lot more than he expected once he saw it on paper. He wants to think about it till December. The centre wasn't pleased, but they haven't said no.

'Everyone manages' would bother me too. Mine's only 11, so nobody has tried this on us yet, but I'd ask your son what he honestly thinks of the current classes before anything else. If he's lukewarm now, paying for another year early locks you in.
