My son's 16 so we're a year behind you, and he's already announced he's "leaving home" for college lol. The bit I keep coming back to is the hour and a half. Three hours a day on the road in first year sounds harder to me than a hostel.

We did one message every Sunday night with the whole week, one line per day, and she replied 'ok' to each line. My son is 16 now so this is old memory, but the rule that helped most was that any change after Sunday needed a call, not a message. Texts get missed, calls don't.

We did Hyderabad to Vijayawada so many times when my son was that age. Curd rice is fine for a few hours if you mix the rice with milk and add just a spoon of curd before you leave. My mother's trick. It sets slowly on the way and doesn't turn sour. Dry things for the in-between: soft chapati rolls, steamed banana pieces, murmura laddoos. And carry double what you think. Train food is the most interesting food in the world to a toddler. Mine ate a corner of someone's newspaper once 😂

My partner is a doctor and our son started asking the same thing at about 13. What we settled on, mostly by trial and error: true but without details. 'Yes, an elderly man, the team tried for a long time.' No ages of children, no injuries, nothing he could picture at night. The surprise was that the true answer seemed to bother him less than the vagueness did. He's 15 now and asks less often, but he still checks on days when one of us comes home looking wrecked.

My son was on gaming forums at about the same age, so different content, same worry. We agreed I wouldn't read anything, but once a week he'd show me his profile and settings, and he'd tell me if anyone asked where he lived, which school, or wanted to move to another app. He did tell me, once. That one time made the whole arrangement worth it.

'Dermatologically tested' usually only means it was tested on skin, not that it passed anything in particular. 'Recommended' can be one doctor in an advertisement. With my son I ignored the labels and asked his doctor for two or three names for the basics.

My son is 15, so this goes back a while, but we extended ours by two weeks instead of a month. The deal was that she stood next to me while I did the bath. By the end I could do it badly, but on my own 😄
