Residential university outside the city, or a day college with a long commute? Daughter is 17

My daughter is in Class 12 and shortlisting for next year. Her two realistic options right now are a residential university a few hours from Hyderabad, or a college in the city that would mean about an hour and a half each way from Bachupally. She prefers the residential one. Her argument is that the commute would eat the time she wants for projects and friends, which isn't wrong. My concern is less about safety and more that she has never run her own day completely. There's always been someone at home in the afternoons. If your child went residential at 17 or 18, what support turned out to matter? And what did you worry about that didn't matter at all?

My son's 16 so we're a year behind you, and he's already announced he's "leaving home" for college lol. The bit I keep coming back to is the hour and a half. Three hours a day on the road in first year sounds harder to me than a hostel.

Son is 21, went away at 18. What mattered: him knowing how to sort out small things alone. A bank form, a doctor's visit, laundry. What I worried about and didn't need to: food. He managed fine. Does she cook at all?

"Never run her own day" covers a lot. What specifically do you think she can't do yet? If it's waking up and getting herself to class, the commute tests that too.

This is a long way off for me, my daughter is 2. But I moved to Hyderabad for work two years ago with no family nearby. What I missed wasn't someone checking on me. It was one person in the same city I could call when something went wrong. Whichever she picks, help her find that person early.
