6on Basic phone or the smartphone she wants, for evening class travel at 12?
We gave our son a basic phone at 12 for exactly this reason. It lasted about eight months. What ended it wasn't peer pressure so much as school. Once class groups started sharing homework on chat, he genuinely needed something more. So a basic phone is fine as long as you both know it's a first step and not the final answer. If she knows there's a review date she may complain less.
0on Six months old and he has a favourite ceiling fan
Mine was exactly like this at that age. He's 17 now and still sleeps with the fan on in December. Some things just stay ❤
2on Every spoonful comes back out with a raspberry. Do we keep going?
Oh I remember this one. My son did the raspberry spit for weeks, maybe a month and a half. What helped was less on the spoon and no reaction at all when it came back out, because the reaction was clearly the best part for him. He's in college now and eats everything in the fridge ❤
0on Overnight train or flight for a trip south with a 7 month old?
We did the overnight train with our son around that age, Bangalore to Hyderabad. It was easier than I feared. Lower berth, he slept through most of it with the swaying. Our first flight a few months later was harder, he cried through the landing ❤️
2on She's in class 10 and has already decided: no entrance coaching, just a regular BSc
One practical thing to check: which universities now admit to BSc through a common entrance test anyway. A few of my son's batchmates found that out late. It's not coaching-level preparation, but it isn't zero either ❤️
3on Hospital maternity package, or pay for each visit as it comes?
This is exactly where ours went over. Eighteen years ago, so the amounts mean nothing now, but our son needed two nights under the lights for jaundice and none of that was in the package. Ask about the baby's stay separately.
4on Two months at my in-laws' with the baby while I stay back for work. Good idea?
I went to my mother's for three months when my son was born, a long time ago now. The rest helped a lot. What nobody warned me about was coming back. My partner had built a whole routine by then, the baby had his own rhythm, and none of it matched. It took us a few weeks to find our feet again. Plan for that part too ❤️
0on Elder son is in class 10 and wants hotel management. Which stream keeps that open?
My worry would be the hours more than the career. A friend's son did hotel management after 12th. The training year meant long kitchen shifts on his feet and festival days at work. He still loves it, but she says nobody warned them about that part.
1on Is it worth asking a new client to fix workshop days so daycare pickup isn't a guess?
Agree with the last part. When my son was small I asked for my office day to be fixed to release day, and it simply became how the team planned. The awkward feeling lasted much longer in my head than in anyone's calendar. One thing I'd add: if you'd rather not explain, put it as a delivery reason, fewer reschedules and proper prep time, not a childcare one. Both are true.
6on She wakes from every afternoon nap crying, and it takes twenty minutes to settle her
My son did this for months as a toddler. We called it his thunderstorm. A snack ready by the bed did more than anything. Banana, a couple of biscuits, water. He's practically grown and still not a pleasant person for the first ten minutes after a nap ❤
1on Does anyone know Sree Balaji High School in Padmarao Nagar? Making a long list for our son's class 4
It's a lot, but it depends on the child. My son travelled close to an hour each way for his two years of inter. He slept on the bus and managed fine. But he was 15 when he started, not 8, and he could sort out his own seat and his own headphones. For a younger child I'd look hard at the closer options first.
1on First time through DOST for degree admissions. How did the phases and web options work for you?
We are about to start the engineering version of this with our son, so I'm reading every reply. A friend told me a later phase can move you up only if the earlier seat was confirmed properly. Worth checking that rule before you begin ❤️
3on 8 year old says she's too big to be looked after by her brother's nanny
Ours said the same about his grandmother at 9. Looking back, I think it was about dignity more than freedom. He wanted to be spoken to like an older child. When she started asking him to help with small things for his younger cousins, it softened.
One that caught us out years ago: our son's old school would only issue the TC after the last term's fees were cleared, and the accounts office took its time. If you're moving, ask your current school how long the TC takes.
