1on My mother can do the 12.30 nursery pickup but doesn't drive. Regular auto, or keep looking?
Exactly what we did in Chennai when our daughter was in kindergarten. My mother-in-law and a fixed auto anna, same man every day for two years. Having the same driver was the key, so my daughter knew him and the school knew his face. It took a few weeks to find the right person. Ask other parents at the gate, someone always has a driver they trust 🙂
6on she's 14 and the career changes every month. forensic science this week
Ours went doctor, then fashion, then settled on economics only in 11th. Nothing was wasted, in each phase she read a lot about it. One thing we did was ask her to find one person actually doing the job and talk to them for 15 minutes. Forensic science especially, the real work is lab work and reports, not crime scenes like the shows. Ammayi was a bit disappointed but it helped her think.
1on My 12 year old's feet overtook mine this summer. My new walking shoes are now 'ours'
Ayyo, the walking shoes. Those are sacred. Our daughter took my running shoes for a school trek and returned them with half the hill still on them 🙂
0on Concert at the stadium with three friends and no adults. She's 14
We let ours go at 15 to a show in Chennai with her cousins. Rules were simple: we dropped, we picked up from a spot we fixed beforehand, live location on the whole time, and if anything felt off she could call and nobody would ask questions till the next day. I was more nervous than she was. She came back hoarse and very happy, and asked if she could go to the next one. If the older sister is going in with them, that changes things a bit too 🙂
0on After a playdate at her friend's villa, my 9 year old asked why our flat is 'so small'
Our daughter asked the same thing at around that age. We tried asking her what she liked about our place instead of defending it. She listed the corner where she reads and the fact that her best friend lives two floors down. The comparison ran out of steam after that.
0on Both our jobs finish late without warning, and the caregiver leaves at 7
Then you need a third person for those nights, not a better split. When our daughter was small, my mother-in-law was on standby two evenings a week, paid in auto fare and dinner 🙂 Most weeks she wasn't even needed, kaani just knowing she was there took the fight out of release nights.
2on Rain day turned into an online class at our place. How closely do you supervise a 7 year old?
Speaker on instead of headphones, so you can hear from anywhere in the house. We did this right through the online-school years with our daughter. When the teacher's voice stops and a cartoon voice starts, you know 🙂
0on Class 7 daughter wants to drop maths tuition and study with a friend instead
The weekly check is the real thing. Our girl tried self-study in class 9 with two friends. First month super, second month it became gossip and Maggi. We kept their plan but added a small test every other Sunday that I set. Konchem strict, but it worked 🙂
2on Daughter has asked me to stop sending her marks to the family group
Fair. 'Nobody asks what's underneath them', that line landed. I'll tell Ammamma she can ask her directly. She'll like getting a call more than a message anyway.
0on Daughter wants physiotherapy. Everyone keeps calling it 'the backup to MBBS'
My partner is a doctor and says the good physios at the hospital are booked weeks ahead 🙂 One thing to check, though, is whether she wants sports specifically. From what I've heard, sports physio jobs are fewer and mostly with private clinics and teams.
2on On workshop days I'm out by 7, and our 5 year old won't eat breakfast unless I'm there
Ha, this. Our daughter ate nothing at home before school for years and polished off whatever her ammamma packed the moment she reached the gate. Don't fight the table, use the van 🙂
1on Elder son thinks cloud certifications will get him a job faster than a degree. I work in cloud
I've hired a few people without degrees and they were good. But every one of them had two or three years of real work to show for it. At 16 he has neither yet. BSc plus certs isn't a bad plan, as long as 'easy' doesn't mean he coasts for three years 🙂
1on Class 10 calendar has no Dasara break, just a 'revision camp'
Happened in my daughter's class 10 last year too. We sent her for the morning sessions and kept the afternoons as holiday, with a note to the class teacher. Nobody made a fuss, and that break kept her sane before the pre-boards. Amma called the afternoons a waste of time till the results came 🙂
4on Our bedtime chat is apparently 'for kids' now
Car or kitchen, for us. My daughter turns up for chai at 11 at night when I'm up late finishing work, and that's when everything comes out. Never at a time I'd have picked 🙂
2on Fair way to handle a caregiver asking for a raise after three months?
Our daughter is a teenager now, but the akka who looked after her as a baby still visits every Sankranti. What I remember is that we never haggled. Paid a little above what others paid and she gave us her best for years 🙂
Ours is ICSE so can't say for CBSE, but my akka's son had to go back twice for one missing attestation. Carry extra photos also, they always want one more than the list says 🙂
1on Power goes off at night twice a week now, and our toddler wakes the moment the fan stops
White noise worked for us too when our daughter was small. We used the old radio tuned between stations 🙂 The cuts in those years were far worse than this.
