Daughter wants physiotherapy. Everyone keeps calling it 'the backup to MBBS'

maple_spoon_1856

She's in class 10. She plays kho-kho seriously and has spent enough time with the team physio to decide that's what she wants to do. Within a week, three relatives have told her it's what you do if you don't get MBBS. Not one of them could tell me what a physiotherapist does all day, what the course is like, or what the jobs look like afterwards. So, from people who know: what's the route after class 12, and what does the work look like five years in? Not interested in 'it has good scope'.

The students I have seen take this route did biology in classes 11 and 12 and applied for the four-year BPT course, which ends with an internship. Some colleges admit through an entrance exam and some don't, and it varies by state, so check the colleges she likes rather than relying on general advice. The ones who seemed happiest knew before they finished whether they wanted hospitals, sports or a clinic. It sounds as though your daughter already knows.

A school friend of my son's is in his third year of BPT. The course is heavy on anatomy and clinical hours; he spends more time at the hospital than my son does at college. What he complains about is starting salaries, not the work. It would be worth her talking to someone a few years in, not only the team physio, who is the success story.

my son's flatmate is a physio student. he's the only one of them who comes home tired in the good way. i don't know enough about the jobs to say more than that.

We work with physios in rehab teams all the time, and they're the ones patients ask for by name. Nobody on the ward thinks of it as a backup. Let the relatives talk, ayyo, they'll find something to say about every course.

My partner is a doctor and says the good physios at the hospital are booked weeks ahead 🙂 One thing to check, though, is whether she wants sports specifically. From what I've heard, sports physio jobs are fewer and mostly with private clinics and teams.

That's the useful part. She does want sports. Where would we find out how many of those jobs there are?

one more thing, since i'm up. the relatives will keep saying it. it helped my son when we stopped arguing with them and let him answer for himself.

This is good advice. Our daughter is only in class 8 and the relatives have already begun. I have been answering for her, and I can see now that it makes her look less sure than she is.
