1on Keeping outgrown baby things for a possible second, or passing them on now?
Car seats even more so. We were told to pass one on only if we could say for certain it had never been in an accident, so ours went to my brother-in-law, who knew its whole history, and not to the colleague who asked for it.
0on A coaching centre is offering 'Extended Essay mentoring' for IB. Is that even allowed?
Ours are both in PYP, so nothing first-hand on the EE. My concern would be the school's academic honesty policy. Before paying for anything, I'd ask her supervisor what kind of outside help is acceptable. Better to have that answer in writing than find out at submission.
2on My 14 year old cooks Sunday dinner now. Cleaning up is apparently my job
Take the win for now. Our girls are younger, but when the elder started making her own breakfast we let the mess go for the first few weeks, then added one cleaning job at a time. First the stove, later the vessels. Adding everything at once is how it stops being fun.
1on Sri Vagdevi Talent School for nursery, and our daughter can't walk yet. Visit next year?
One thing starting early does give you is time to see a school on an ordinary day rather than an open day. We dropped in at a couple of schools informally a year ahead, and that told us more than the formal tours. Two years ahead does seem a lot, though.
4on Does Kakatiya Techno School in Vanasthalipuram ever let colony children use its ground on Sundays?
And put the request in writing with the names of the adults who will be responsible. A school is far more likely to agree to a named group than to 'colony children'.
0on holy faith high school in bolarum for class 1. too far from bachupally?
If you are open to State Board, ask how many children in the class 1 sections come from English-medium preschools. It gives you a quick sense of the mix your son would be in.
1on My 4 year old will only eat from his thatha's steel plate now
That's lovely. Our younger one claimed her grandmother's small brass bowl the same way. It now comes on every trip, wrapped in a towel.
0on Would St. Rita High School's holidays line up with mine? I teach at another CBSE school
Even inside one family it rarely lines up. Our two girls are in the same school and still have different exam weeks, because the junior and senior sections plan separately. I'd treat a matching calendar as a bonus rather than a reason to choose a school.
1on Sanghamitra in Kukatpally for our son's nursery, while his sister stays where she is
Two schools for two years here, with our daughters. It worked only because each of us did one drop. On days both drops fell on one person, it was 90 minutes in the car. Check the timings first: if dispersal is 30 minutes apart in opposite directions, that decides it.
0on 4 year old won't eat anything if one food touches another on his plate
Our younger one had exactly this at about four. We bought a steel plate with raised dividers, which brought the katori count down to one plate. She started mixing things herself by six, on her own terms.
4on Neighbours have asked my partner to take their class 2 children for a homework hour. Good idea?
Keep it to three or four children at most. With class 2 the hour is mostly sitting beside each child while they write, and more than four means someone is always waiting. Also decide upfront whether your partner checks homework or teaches it. Once parents are paying, they tend to expect the second.
1on My 12 year old has written his own questions for our Discoveri Oaks visit
Your son's football question is a good one. Ask what the children do at lunch and break, and how much open ground the little ones get. Our younger one decided between two schools purely on the swings, and frankly she wasn't wrong.
0on 11 yr old wants a proper football coach. Apparently I don't count
Ask her what you're doing wrong. Mine told me I explain too much and let her run too little. She was right, which was annoying.
On the class 7 question, ask them directly which schools their class 7 children moved to in the last couple of years. A school that has thought about it will have an answer ready. We asked something similar at a primary-only school once and the answer told us a lot.
1on Our preschooler loves kicking a ball. Anything organised for a girl this young near Nacharam?
Our two learnt more from evening games with the older kids in our society than from any class at that age. If there are a few children in your building or lane, a ball and an hour downstairs might give her the playing-with-others part without a fee.
0on Class 9 starts at 7.10 am from June. She has badminton till 8 at night
Ours aren't teenagers yet, but our school day starts at 7.30 and the only thing that worked was moving dinner earlier. Food by 7.30 even if it means eating in the car on the way back, then bath and bed. Weekends we let them sleep.
4on partner away 10 days in may and i'm on call half those nights. no family here
We have a similar arrangement with another family. It works, but agree beforehand what the other parents can decide on their own if your child wakes up unwell at 3 am. We hadn't, and the one night it mattered there were a lot of phone calls.
3on i teach primary all week. at every family visit my sister hands me my nephew's homework
From the parent side: our daughters' favourite uncle is a teacher who never brings up school unless they do. They tell him more about their day than they tell us. Your nephew might like that version of you better too.
