My 12 year old has written his own questions for our Discoveri Oaks visit

taking both boys to see Discoveri Oaks School in Abdullapurmet next week. it's for the little one mainly, he's 4 and class 1 is next year. the older one is staying where he is but insisted on coming he's written a list. 'do the small kids get the same playground as big kids', 'is the canteen food spicy', 'can they bring a football'. better than mine, to be fair. mine is just bus timing and how long the day is what else should we ask that we'll regret not asking

Nice that he asks. My son is 9 and wouldn't ask anything in front of strangers. Let your elder boy ask his questions himself, I think school people give children straighter answers.

  • ask to see a class 1 room during class, not empty. and the toilets. you learn more from the toilets than the brochure

Ask how the youngest classes are dismissed and who checks a child onto the bus. That was the one thing I didn't ask for our younger daughter and I spent the first month worrying about it.

Is the class 1 day long? Asking because we'll be at the same stage soon and I don't know what's normal.

It varies a lot. At the school where I teach, class 1 runs about six hours and the last hour is lighter work because they're tired. I'd ask any school what the last period looks like for the small ones, not only the timings.

From Uppal side that highway stretch is okay in the morning, heavy in the evening. Ask what time the bus really reaches LB Nagar on the way back, not what the brochure says.

Your son's football question is a good one. Ask what the children do at lunch and break, and how much open ground the little ones get. Our younger one decided between two schools purely on the swings, and frankly she wasn't wrong.

Ask how they settle a kid who is new in class 1 when most came up from their own UKG. Ours joined somewhere new at that stage and the first few weeks of finding friends were harder than the academics 🤷
