2on Is it fine to let a 1 year old play in the next room if I can hear her?
I have a 2 year old now as well as a teenager, so I've done this twice, years apart. The second time round I put a cheap camera on the shelf, and it was very useful for exactly this, twenty minutes in the kitchen. But the doorway mat is the better first step. The camera made me lazier about checking in person ❤️
2on my aunt is bringing a suitcase of baby clothes from mysuru. we've already bought all of it
Before she arrives, check which of yours are still returnable. When my son was born we sent back a whole box of unopened newborn sets once the family things came in. They outgrow that size in a few weeks anyway ❤️
1on 10 year old has decided on archery. Anyone near Manikonda?
My daughter tried it at a summer camp when she was 12. Worth knowing: most of a session is standing in line waiting for your turn, then walking out to collect arrows. She liked it, but she was surprised how little actual shooting there was. Also ask whether they have a beginner bow light enough for a 10 year old. Hers was too heavy for the first week.
0on Three class 6 open houses, all on weekday mornings
Half-days add up quicker than you think. When we were choosing for my daughter, years ago now, the most useful thing turned out to be standing at the gate at pickup time and talking to parents. Costs nothing and they don't give you the brochure answers.
2on Class 10 son put a 'Do not disturb' sign on his door. Six snack trips since 7 pm
Ha, approved interruptions. My daughter's list says 'emergencies only' and, under it, 'chai' ❤
4on Nephew got to be class teacher for one period on Teachers' Day. He gave a surprise test.
This made my morning. Did he correct them too? I hope he wrote 'see me' on someone's paper ♥
0on Flying with a toddler in the festival rush, from someone who works the airport side
Thank you, this is very useful. We fly to Chennai for a family function in October with our little one and my older daughter. My worry is the bus from the terminal to the plane. Last time he screamed for that whole ride. Is there any way to avoid the bus, or is that decided by the airline?
3on Son wants to skip college and join our distribution business after Inter
This one is close to home for me. My brother wanted to join our father's business at that age. They agreed on a written plan for one year: what he would handle, what he would earn, and what would happen if it didn't work. They sat down again at the end of the year and decided the next step together. Having it on paper made both sides calmer ❤️
1on Client wants me on-site three days a week from September. Is a 9 to 6 preschool day too long at 4?
My elder one did a long day at that age, years ago now. The first month was hard. Cranky every evening, asleep in the car. After that she settled, mostly because the nap there actually happened. Ask whether the nap is in a quiet room or on mats in a corner of the classroom. That made the difference for us.
1on grandson's homework is one letter written twenty times. he does four and starts drawing
My daughter did exactly this at that age. Her teacher's trick was to circle the best letter on each line and let her try to beat it. It turned the page into a small game. Worth a try before deciding who is right ❤️
6on What do people like about the early classes at Care Model High School in Nallakunta?
That's how we chose for our elder one years ago, and we'll do the same for the little one. One thing I learnt: ask about the number of adults in the LKG room, not only the number of children. Two adults with 25 kids felt very different from one ❤️
6on Online physics tuition at 9 pm with a teacher in Chennai. She likes it, I don't like the hour
Hadn't thought of asking for a weekend morning. Will message her today.
I have a 14 year old who would absolutely be one of those girls. If a parent asked her kindly she'd stop at once, and be mortified for a week. I'd talk to them. Nicely. ❤️
6on Does reading the new textbooks before school starts make a child bored in class later?
My daughter read every new science book in May, every year. She's 14 now, still does it, and it has never caused a problem in class. What I'd watch for is the opposite: once school starts, he may stop reading for fun because reading has become schoolwork. Keep some non-school books lying around.
6on Summer reading list for grade 1. She can't read most of it yet
Ten books in a break is a lot even as read-alouds. Pick the ones she likes and read those three times rather than all ten once. Then ask her teacher in the first week. ❤️
0on My 10 year old has asked me to stop putting her photos on my WhatsApp status
Our 14 year old asked the same at 11. We agreed I show her the photo first and she gets a veto. She uses it less than I expected. Now she asks me not to post her baby brother 'in that ugly romper' ❤️
The tiffin stop is the whole secret. My 14 year old and I walk to the idli cart near the tank every Sunday and she has not missed it once ❤️ The little one comes along in the stroller for his share of vada.
2on Our boys split chores by 'whoever used it last'. Somehow nobody ever did
This works until someone discovers they can be 'busy' for their entire week. My 14 year old found that loophole in about ten days. We added a rule that skipped jobs carry over to the next week, which closed it, mostly.
3on Class 2 booklist has a GK textbook, and apparently it's examined
Agree on asking. Our school had GK in the primary years too. The questions came almost entirely from what was done in class, lots of one-word answers and picture questions. My daughter enjoyed the picture ones. It needed no study at home until about class 4 ❤
