0on Nephew lives with us on school days and misses every weekend birthday party
We do not have two households, so I cannot speak to that part. What we did have, with my shift roster, was plenty of weekends when nobody was free to drive, and our two missed a lot of parties at that age. What helped was not trying to cover everything. We asked each of them which one or two things really mattered, usually a regular game rather than every birthday, and planned the driving around those. The occasional sleepover at our place in return kept them on the lists. At 11 he can probably tell you which ones he minds missing.
2on rainy-day play spots near ecil that aren't inside a mall?
Our children are teenagers now, so treat this as old information. When they were small we relied on two things on wet days: the children's section at the public library on our side, and simply having another family over and taking turns to host. I can't say whether the library keeps the same hours now. Worth a phone call before you take two children there.
4on Does Pioneer World School in Madhapur run anything for under-2s with a parent?
When you find one, ask whether the school's own staff run it or an outside group rents the space at weekends. If part of the reason is to get a feel for the school, that distinction matters.
4on Three class 6 open houses, all on weekday mornings
Just back from an evening shift, so this is a good time to answer. When we were moving my daughter for class 9, I went to one in person and asked the other schools for a phone call with their admissions office instead. Two agreed, one said visits only. Whether the calls told me as much as a visit would have, I honestly can't say. They answered my questions, but I didn't see a classroom.
1on Daycare wants each parent to spend one morning a month in the baby room. I'm on the road most weeks
Before planning around it, I'd ask the daycare whether this is a requirement or an invitation. The wording 'be part of the classroom' sounds like an invitation, but only they can tell you. If it's flexible, offering a quarterly morning that you fix well in advance may be more realistic than a monthly one you keep cancelling.
1on swimming class changing room. he's 6 and doesn't want to come into the ladies' side anymore
On the shower: most pools care more about a rinse before getting in than after. A proper wash at home afterwards is fine as far as I know. On the costume, going one size up on the swimming shorts makes a real difference at that age. Tight wet ones are hard for anyone with cold hands.
0on Only 10, and already the oldest at his after-school centre by three years
Same gap in our house when our younger one was around that age. What worked for us was stitching together two things on alternate days, a sports academy close to home and a supervised study room at a tuition centre, with our caregiver collecting her in between. It was more logistics than a single centre, but she stopped being the oldest child in the room. I would check whether any academy near you runs a 4 to 6 batch on weekdays.
1on 14 yr old joined the school photography club. family photos now need eleven takes
Ask her to take a few of you when you aren't posing. The ones my daughter takes when we aren't looking are the only decent photos of me in years.
1on Our cook's food has twice the oil of mine, and now my son only wants hers
Framing it around the family's health rather than her cooking usually goes down better. 'We're all trying to cut oil, can we measure it?' is easier to hear than 'your food is too oily'. My two complained for about a week when we did this at home, then stopped noticing.
1on Rockwell in Kokapet runs CBSE, IGCSE and IB. How does a family choose one for class 1?
I should say what I know and what I'm guessing. I don't know this school, and my two have only ever been in CBSE. From that experience, the board began to matter around class 8 or 9, when the exam pattern and subject combinations started shaping choices. Before that it was mostly the school's own teaching. What I would ask, in your place, is about exit points. If the family moves cities or changes its mind in class 6, which of the three tracks makes that easiest? The counsellors should be able to answer plainly. If they can't, that tells you something too.
0on Class 2 timetable has eleven subjects. Is that normal now?
The useful question is which of these are assessed and which are exposure. Ask the class teacher at the first meeting for whatever assessment plan they follow. If the school can't tell you which subjects carry marks, that is worth knowing too.
1on My mother insists on doing the night feeds so I can 'work'. She is exhausted and won't admit it
It might help to ask her what she'd prefer rather than what's fair. Some grandparents genuinely like the quiet night feeds and hate the daytime work. Mine would have given up nights before she gave up bathing the baby. You won't know which until you ask the question that way.
2on what temperature do you keep the ac at for a 2 month old in this heat
Speaking as a parent here, not as anyone's doctor: there isn't one right number, and your paediatrician's 'comfortable, not cold' is the useful rule. What I would avoid is the room swinging from cool to hot when the AC goes off in the middle of the night. That swing bothered our son more than any particular setting did. Is the helper switching it off because she feels cold herself?
0on Sun's up before 6 and so is our toddler. Do blackout curtains help?
Blackout lining helped me a great deal after night shifts, and helped my children when they were small. In my experience the gaps at the sides and top matter more than the fabric. We closed the edges with velcro strips stuck to the wall.
0on Somewhere to go on Saturday mornings with a 14 year old, now that the baby runs the house
With two teenagers and my shifts, the one outing that has lasted for us is a 6.30 badminton court booking with breakfast afterwards. The court gives you a scoreboard; the breakfast is why they turn up. Book it a few weeks ahead, otherwise it gets dropped the first lazy Saturday.
