swimming class changing room. he's 6 and doesn't want to come into the ladies' side anymore

linen_pool_4025

his swimming class is at 6 on weekday evenings and i'm the one who takes him. so far he's changed with me in the ladies' room. this week he stopped at the door and said the other boys go to the gents' side. he can't manage the wet costume and the locker on his own yet, and obviously i can't go in with him. my partner's lab hours rule out evenings. what did other mums of boys do at this age?

Two boys here, been through it twice. Dress him in the costume under his clothes at home, so after class he only has to get the wet one off and dry clothes on. Practise that in the bathroom at home a few times, with a timer if he likes that sort of thing. We did the locker ourselves before class and gave him only the key.

the costume under the clothes is clever, he'll like that. still worried about getting the wet one off, it's tight and he gets stuck. and does he need to shower there or can that wait till home

On the shower: most pools care more about a rinse before getting in than after. A proper wash at home afterwards is fine as far as I know. On the costume, going one size up on the swimming shorts makes a real difference at that age. Tight wet ones are hard for anyone with cold hands.

Just off a night shift at the airport. At my daughter's pool the coaches stand at the door of the boys' side for the small ones and help with costumes if asked. Worth asking his coach whether anyone does that at yours. They've seen this a hundred times.

Does the pool have a family changing room at all? The one near us doesn't, which is half the reason I keep putting off lessons for my 3 year old.
