0on My son interviewed me for a class project on careers. I got 3 out of 5 for 'answers too long'
No rating is the kind version. My 15 year old marks my explanations by how many times I say 'basically'. Last count was eleven in one dinner.
3on Every diaper change with our crawler is now a wrestling match
With my younger one we turned it into a 'where's your nose, where's your ear' game. Half the time she forgot to escape because she was busy pointing. She's 9 now and I'd completely forgotten about it until I read this.
0on Back at work, partner on leave does every night. Should I still be taking a feed?
Up at 3.30 on an incident call writing this, so I'm hardly one to talk about sleep. With our second I took the 11 pm feed, and it's the one I remember most fondly. Quiet house, just the two of us.
2on 'technically' is my 12 year old's favourite word now, and he wins every argument with it
Our younger one went through a phase of this. What ended it was using it back on her, cheerfully, every single time: 'technically, screen time ended ten minutes ago.' The word lost its shine within a fortnight.
1on Class 10 science. Is NCERT enough, or do we need the reference books the tuition keeps adding?
Our elder daughter wrote class 10 this March. NCERT plus exemplar covered the paper well. The case-based questions were the ones that needed practice, and for those the board's own sample papers were more useful than the reference books. The reference books earned their place in one area: physics numericals, where NCERT has too few.
1on He bangs his head on the cot mattress to fall asleep. Every night now
Our younger daughter rocked like this until she was about two. Hands and knees, rocking, some thumping. We tried going in every time and it only seemed to make it last longer, so we stopped reacting, and it faded over a few months. She's nine now and sleeps like a stone. I remember the 3 am monitor stage very well.
0on Bought my 12 year old new sports shoes. He says they're the wrong brand and won't wear them
With our older one it passed by about 14. She now buys the cheapest thing in the shop and tells us brands are a scam. Until then, we mostly bought the plain versions of whatever was popular, which seemed to be enough.
4on Weekend Tamil reading class for an 8 year old, anywhere near Puppalaguda or Narsingi?
Same experience with Tamil in Secunderabad. Online worked for reading with my younger daughter. Her speaking didn't improve until we had her read short things aloud to her grandmother, who was very patient with the mistakes.
0on holy mary high school in bowenpally for class 6. how hard is the telugu paper coming from cbse
We're in Secunderabad, so Bowenpally is close, but we didn't look at Holy Mary for ours. From what parents I know have said about State Board language papers in general, the writing part is heavier, letters, essays and grammar, rather than reading. Speaking it at home helps more than you'd think. I'd ask the school for a past class 6 paper and have her try it.
2on Ten days into class 11 and she's lost on trigonometry. The school says it settles
She was still up when I read this, so I asked her about studying with a friend. She already has one in mind who apparently 'gets trig'. That may be the cheaper fix.
0on Ten days into class 11 and she's lost on trigonometry. The school says it settles
Six weeks is useful to know. Her first unit test is in July, so that's a natural point to decide.
0on He'll only walk if I hold one finger, so I spend every evening bent double doing laps of the flat
Enjoy the sitting-down phase while it lasts. Our younger one did the one-finger walk for about three weeks. Then one day she let go to pick up a shoe and walked off with it as if she'd always known how.
3on Odissi teacher anywhere near Himayatnagar who takes a 4 year old?
Not Odissi, but our younger one started Bharatanatyam at 5. The first year was mostly rhythm, basic steps and learning to sit still for the namaskaram at the start. At 4 I'm not sure she'd have managed the sitting still. Odia cultural associations sometimes run weekend children's classes, might be worth asking there instead of the dance schools.
2on Son wants a polytechnic diploma after class 10 instead of inter. He's 14
Two people on my team came in through a diploma and then BTech by lateral entry, and both are very good at hands-on systems work. One thing they told me: the diploma years are heavy on practicals and attendance, so it's not a softer option. Also, admission is through the state polytechnic entrance (POLYCET here), which his school won't prepare him for. Check the timeline early.
We are in the middle of the same thing with our elder daughter, on the CBSE side. Her group is going three different ways, two to integrated colleges and one to another city. What I have noticed is that the planning has become the friendship for now: they talk about each other's colleges more than their own. I have not raised it directly. I did ask her in the car which of them she thought she would still see in a year, and that started a longer conversation than any direct question would have. How it holds once their days look completely different, I don't know yet. I would like to hear from someone further along too.
0on Newborn photographer's quote came with a mood board. In one picture the baby is dressed as a carrot
We didn't do one for either of ours, mainly because the second wouldn't sleep long enough to try. The photos we go back to are the ordinary ones, the elder one holding her sister on the sofa in terrible lighting. If your partner wants it, maybe a shorter session without the props, and see how he takes it.
