1on Long drive for Diwali with a 3 month old. Everyone in the family has a different opinion
We made a similar trip to my parents' place when our son was about four months old. The drive was the easy part. What tired him was being passed from lap to lap for an entire evening. We agreed beforehand that one of us would take him to a quiet room every couple of hours, regardless of who was asking to hold him. It raised one or two eyebrows and was worth it.
0on Relatives say two languages at home are slowing our 1 year old down. Says who?
Counting at that age would make anyone anxious. When relatives did this with our son, we simply said the paediatrician was happy and changed the subject; after a few times they stopped. His doctor told us the same as yours, keep both languages and mention anything that worries us at checkups. A relative's number is a memory from decades ago, and I would treat it as one.
2on How heavy is the homework at Good Citizens High School around class 6?
Fair point. I will ask for the class 6 timetable when I go in on Saturday. Finding two parents who will give a straight answer is the harder part, which is partly why I posted here.
3on School is asking class 7 parents whether we'd prefer a five-day week with longer days
Does the survey say what the extra forty-five minutes would be used for? If it is the same subjects spread longer, I would expect the benefit to be mostly the Saturday. If it includes activity periods or supervised homework time, that changes the comparison entirely. I would want that answered before voting.
0on Keyboard teacher said to practise every day. My 9 year old remembered at 11.40 pm
Writing this from the hospital at nearly two, so I can hardly comment on anyone's hours. Headphones might keep the practice and lose the concert. Mine is 9 as well, and I would take this over any argument about practising.
2on class 7 homework takes three hours because she rewrites any page with one mistake
We went through something similar with our son in class 3. What eventually helped was a rule we agreed on together: one neat strike-through is allowed, and a page is only redone if the teacher asks for it. He tested it for a while, but within a few weeks the evenings were shorter. It may also be worth checking with the class teacher whether corrections bother them. Children sometimes assume a strictness the teacher doesn't have.
2on Class 2 sum marked wrong because he added the tens first
Did the worksheet instruction say to use the column method? If it did, the cross is fair, if annoying. If it didn't, a polite note in the diary asking whether other methods are accepted seems reasonable.
0on No phuchka till the rains ease. Both boys say I'm overreacting
I would separate the things you've grouped together. The items made with water from open containers are the ones I hold the line on with my own son in this season. Something hot, fried in front of you, is a different matter. At 15 he will make his own choice when you aren't there, so explaining why one is worse than the other may get you further than a full ban.
3on Is there any dance class where an 8 year old and his dad can learn together?
I can't help with a venue, but I'd check what he's really asking for. When my son asked to join my morning swim, it turned out he wanted the drive there and the dosa after, not the swimming. If it's time with you, the sofa pushed back on a Sunday might be exactly right.
1on My mother says our toddler eats like a sparrow. She seems perfectly happy to me
With our son, the paediatrician's advice was to look at the week rather than the meal, and at the growth chart at each check-up rather than the plate. That helped me more than anything else, because some days he ate almost nothing and on others he ate like a teenager. I would ask your doctor to show you her chart at the next visit.
6on Telugu at home, IB at school, and my 13 year old can't read a Telugu signboard
In most families I know, speaking a language and reading it seem to go separately. Our son speaks Telugu with his grandparents and reads only the little his school teaches. I suspect, without much evidence, that speaking is what matters at your son's age, and reading can come later if he wants it. The original poster's daughter is asking for it herself at 13, which seems to be how it goes.
1on He swims a full length now, but with his head up the whole way. Worth getting it corrected at 9?
He does have goggles, but they leak and he complains about them constantly, so that may well be it. We'll try a better-fitting pair this weekend and I'll ask the coach about breathing drills directly. Thank you both, this is more useful than what I got at the pool.
1on Do nursery kids at Kennedy High in Kukatpally get written homework?
It may help to ask the school at the visit, and to phrase it specifically: 'what goes home in a typical nursery week?' The general question usually gets 'very little'. The specific one gets you a description. If they show you a nursery notebook, notice whether the writing in it looks like the child's or clearly an adult's.
0on Our class 12 son hasn't laughed since January. Then the neighbours' toddler started visiting
Scheduling his breaks around a toddler's availability is the most organised thing I have heard from a JEE household. I would keep it. A planned break he looks forward to will do more for him than one more hour of tired revision.
0on Can she get through ICSE class 9 and 10 with a senior's old books?
It may help to put the two lists side by side first. If the only change is the year printed on the cover, the old books will do. If a chapter has been added or a prescribed literature text has changed, that particular book would need to be new. A mix of old and new might also be easier for her to accept.
0on Homework in the early classes at St Isaac Advent, Borabanda? Thinking ahead for our son
I haven't any first-hand knowledge of this school, so only a point on process. When we looked at primary sections for our son, the most reliable answers came from asking the class teacher, if they let you meet one, what a typical Tuesday's homework was. Specific day, specific subject. General questions got general answers.
