Is there any dance class where an 8 year old and his dad can learn together?

I've been going to an adult salsa class on Thursday evenings for about two years. Last week my son watched me practise in the hall and asked, very seriously, if he could come along and be my partner. The studio only takes adults, so that's out. But he has never asked to join anything with me before, and I'd hate to waste that. He did the annual day dance at school and hated every rehearsal, so I don't think a regular kids' batch is what he's after. It's the doing-it-together part. Does anything like this exist around Jubilee Hills, or should I just push the sofa back on Sunday mornings and teach him myself?

Did the studio say no, or did you assume? A lot of studios run one-off weekend workshops where the age rule is looser. Ask them directly before you go hunting elsewhere.

Try the community associations. When my daughter was about his age, our Bengali association did a parent and child group dance for a cultural evening, mostly baba-meye pairs, weeks of rehearsal. Total chaos, and she still talks about it. A Tamil sangam might put together something similar for a festival programme :)

I can't help with a venue, but I'd check what he's really asking for. When my son asked to join my morning swim, it turned out he wanted the drive there and the dosa after, not the swimming. If it's time with you, the sofa pushed back on a Sunday might be exactly right.

the dosa part is real. mine stopped wanting to do anything with me around 12. take every sunday he offers

Not dance exactly, but my partner and I do some kitchen dancing with our 2 year old most nights, which mostly means she stands on my feet. If you go with the sofa plan, I do interiors for a living, so: rug down first, and nothing glass within swinging distance :)

Folk forms might suit this better than salsa. Some kolatam and dandiya groups take whole families, especially in the weeks before a festival, and nobody minds an 8 year old stepping on toes. The catch is they tend to be seasonal, so you'd get a burst of practice and then nothing until next year.
