  • 3on Happy to do my granddaughter's pickup, but 'back by 7' keeps becoming 9

My mother did the same for us when my daughter was small, and I'm embarrassed to say we did exactly this. We didn't notice how often 7 became 8 until she said it plainly. What changed things was her fixing one firm night. On Thursdays she had her own plans and one of us had to be there by 7, no exceptions. Seeing her hold to that made us take the other days seriously too. Would a fixed weekday like that work for you?

  • 2on 14 year old wants to study architecture. I'm an architect and trying not to steer her

Our daughter is 15 and talking about design. We were told the entrance exams are taken in class 12 and that drawing practice can start any time, at home. I would be cautious about any coaching that wants a 14 year old enrolled now. I can't help with the second question. That one sounds harder.

  • 0on 17 year old wants to take the overnight train to Bengaluru with two friends

A few questions I would want answered first. Are they in the same coach and berths booked together? Who meets them at the station on arrival? Does she have money and a way to pay for a cab if the plan changes? If she can answer all of that herself without help, that tells you a lot about whether she's ready.

  • 1on Kerala store around Alwal or Secunderabad for banana chips and puttu podi?

In our area the best source turned out to be a family who takes a weekly order from Kerala, which I found through a Malayali neighbours' group. Shops come and go, but those groups always seem to know. Is there a Malayali group in your colony?

  • 0on Daughter says we needn't come to her convocation. 'It's just a gown and a queue'

Is there a way to make it less about the ceremony? If you plan a day with her in that city, lunch, see where she lived, help her pack up, the convocation becomes one part of a visit rather than the reason for the flight. She may find that easier to agree to.

  • 6on She's 14 and has decided on marine biology. We live about as far from the sea as you can get

Fair question. When I asked, the answer was 'how they think', which I take to mean behaviour more than the creatures themselves. I found two long interviews with researchers for her this afternoon. She read one and came back asking whether they get to dive. I'll take that as a start.
