She's 14 and has decided on marine biology. We live about as far from the sea as you can get

It started with a documentary series over the holidays and hasn't stopped. She now knows more about octopuses than anyone at our dinner table needs to, and has announced that marine biology is the plan. Dismissing it seems wrong. Treating a 14 year old's enthusiasm as a career decision seems wrong too. She's in MYP, so her subjects stay broad for a while yet. How does a child in Hyderabad test whether this is a real interest? Short courses, a visit somewhere, someone she could talk to? I'd like her to meet the dull parts of the job as well as the octopuses.

What exactly does she like, the animals or the science? Those are different things. A lot of marine biology is data and lab work, often nowhere near a beach. Before any course, get her to read accounts by people who do the job and see whether she still wants what they spend their days on.

Fair question. When I asked, the answer was 'how they think', which I take to mean behaviour more than the creatures themselves. I found two long interviews with researchers for her this afternoon. She read one and came back asking whether they get to dive. I'll take that as a start.
