2on From ICSE to State Board in class 1. Anyone done this at St. Johns Global Edu-Tech in Uppal?
My daughter did State Board until class 7 and then moved to CBSE, so the other direction and much later. At class 1 I don't think the board is what he will notice. The new building, new friends and a longer or shorter day will matter far more to him. The language subject is the one place I'd ask for the books early.
4on Class 2 field trip on a weekday, and he wants me there, not his father
Mine is in her first year of college now. I asked her recently which school trips she remembered me missing, and she couldn't name a single one. She does remember the one I went on in class 3, mainly because I got the group lost looking for the bus. If it's one lecture, I'd swap it. If it becomes every event, that's a separate conversation.
1on What is LKG like at Moulana Azad Memorial High School in Chintal?
Our warehouse is in that area, so I pass the school most days. I know nothing about the classes, sorry. One practical thing: the roads get very busy around the factory shift change, so when you visit, go at the time you'd be dropping her, not mid-morning.
2on Class 9 son has wanted to fly planes for a year now. Anything to keep open before 11th?
Mine wanted this at 14, and something else entirely at 16. Keeping science open costs nothing. If an aviation open day or an airport visit comes up, that will tell him more than months of reading.
0on Centenary Baptist Church High School in Marredpally, or stay with the big schools near Nallagandla?
We chose the school first, years ago, and then rented near it. With a small child the daily drive ends up mattering more than anything you see on the visit.
1on Son has one offer from campus placements and wants to wait for a better company
Ours has just started college, so this is a few years off for us. When did your son start preparing for placements? Is it a final-year thing or does it need to start earlier?
0on My 9 year old wants to try for Sainik School. Do we take it seriously?
A classmate of my daughter's in primary prepared for the class 6 entrance. His family started about a year ahead with a coaching class on weekends, and the maths section was the main focus as far as I remember. He didn't get through in the end, but his parents said the preparation helped him in class 6 anyway. The residential part is worth talking through with your son properly, at nine he may not have pictured it at all.
One practical thing from my daughter's friends who did A levels: if there's any chance she studies in India after all, Indian universities ask for an equivalence certificate for the A level grades, and some courses have their own subject rules. Keep a copy of every marksheet from the start. One of her friends lost two weeks during admissions chasing that paperwork.
1on Our 8 month old reaches for the part-time helper over his full-time caregiver, and she's noticed
It moves around at that age. Our daughter went to whoever happened to be most entertaining that month. One month it was my mother, then the watchman, then briefly a neighbour's dog. I wouldn't read anything lasting into it.
3on Elder son is in CBSE, and the nursery closest to home is Krishnaveni Talent School, State Board
For nursery and the first couple of classes, board is a smaller factor than the day itself: how long it is, how far, how tired he comes home. It starts to matter around class 5 or 6. So the real question is whether you'd be comfortable moving him then, if it came to that.
4on Our 3 month old yawns every time my father starts one of his stories
The eye contact is the worst part. Mine adds a slow nod.
2on Son wants a polytechnic diploma after class 10 instead of inter. He's 14
In our warehouse, the maintenance supervisors who did diplomas often know more of the practical side than the graduate trainees. That said, ask him which branch. 'Diploma' covers everything from civil to computers to textiles, and the outcomes aren't the same.
0on Our son wants to know exactly what I earn, so he can plan for college
We told our daughter a range at about the same age, along with what we had set aside for her education specifically. The second number turned out to be the one she cared about. The salary on its own meant very little to her once she saw rent, fees and everything else next to it.
4on Does nursery at St Marys High School, Saroornagar, run as its own little section?
No idea about this particular school. Our daughter is long past nursery, but your question is the one that sorted our shortlist back then. At two schools the nursery shared a corridor and toilets with the older classes; at one it had its own gate and a separate dispersal time. We went with that one. One more thing worth asking, given the distance: what time the nursery day ends. If it finishes at noon, you could have a three-hour school day and nearly two hours on the road for it.
1on she can only fall asleep twisting my hair round her fingers
My daughter held the edge of my sari pallu every night. When I travelled, my mother gave her one of my old saris to hold and it worked better than any of us expected. Something that smells of you might carry her through the late-session nights.
1on School has paired our class 10 daughter with an alumni mentor. How involved should I be?
My daughter's school ran something like this when she was in class 9. The questions she asked most were what the mentor earned at her internship and whether she ever wanted to quit engineering. I only found out months later, when she told me herself. That's the trade, I think. You stay out, and you hear about it eventually.
