My 9 year old wants to try for Sainik School. Do we take it seriously?

Living in Sainikpuri, I suppose it was bound to come up! He's in class 4, a cadet from the colony came to speak at his school and now he's decided. He has started doing push-ups before bed ❤️ I know the entrance is for class 6 and it's residential, which is the part I'm not ready for. But I don't want to brush off something he's this excited about. Has anyone's child prepared for it? How early did you start, and did you use coaching or just practise at home?

A classmate of my daughter's in primary prepared for the class 6 entrance. His family started about a year ahead with a coaching class on weekends, and the maths section was the main focus as far as I remember. He didn't get through in the end, but his parents said the preparation helped him in class 6 anyway. The residential part is worth talking through with your son properly, at nine he may not have pictured it at all.

That's very useful, thank you. We talked about it at dinner yesterday and asked what he thought living at school would be like. He said 'like a sleepover but longer'. So yes, he hasn't pictured it at all. We'll let him do some sample papers for fun this year and come back to it next summer.
