she can only fall asleep twisting my hair round her fingers

rose_lantern_6982

started a few weeks ago. one hand in my hair, winding a lock round and round her fingers, and she's out in ten minutes. without it, forty minutes of crying. my partner's hair is too short, we've checked. there's now a permanent knot behind my left ear, and three evenings a week i'm at the clinic late, so bedtime falls apart on those nights. anyone's baby do this? did you move her on to something else?

My son did this with my earlobe rather than my hair, and he was four before he stopped. What finally worked was a soft toy with a satin label he could rub instead. We swapped it in slowly, my ear for a minute and then the label. It took a couple of weeks, and he slept with that toy well into primary school.

My daughter held the edge of my sari pallu every night. When I travelled, my mother gave her one of my old saris to hold and it worked better than any of us expected. Something that smells of you might carry her through the late-session nights.
