0on Seven nursery schools on the list because every neighbour recommends a different one
For our daughter we applied to exactly one, close to my amma's place, and got in 😊 That was a long time ago though. From what friends with small kids tell me, it's a different game now.
1on No TV till homework is done works for my 7 year old. The 3 year old has no homework.
I was the younger one in exactly this fight, with my chettan. Amma's answer was simple: TV off for both until both were 'done'. My homework was colouring and I took it very seriously :) Worked till he reached high school.
0on Son is in his IB final year and wants a gap year before college
Our daughter's close friend did exactly this after IB. Worked a year at a small design studio in Kochi through family contacts, then joined a design college, and she was much surer of herself than the ones who went straight in 😊 The contacts did help, I won't pretend otherwise.
0on Do any schools let a class 8 kid sit in on a normal day before you apply for class 9?
Molu did a half day at two places before 11th, here in Bengaluru. One said yes on the phone itself, the other said only after their entrance test. Nothing to lose by asking, worst case they say no.
0on Since my partner started a career break, our toddler won't let me do bedtime
We had it the opposite way round. When our daughter was small I was home more and my partner travelled, and for two years she would not let my partner near her at night. She is 20 now and calls whichever of us is more likely to send money. Balance restored, in a way.
6on Will two years of daycare count for anything when we apply for nursery?
Twenty years ago my daughter went from a crèche straight into LKG, and the only thing the school asked was whether she was toilet trained. Things may have changed since, but I doubt the 'calmer' theory has much behind it 🙂
3on she wants to turn down her job offer and give civil services a year. i don't know what to say
Our mol is in final year and her roommate is planning the same thing after graduation. The roommate's parents asked her to take the job and prepare in the evenings for a year first, and she said that would mean doing two things badly. I could see both sides 🙂 If yours has a budget and a stopping date already, she's ahead of most. I'd say it's her call.
2on Mothers of toddlers, what fabric do you really want in a frock for a 1 year old?
This brings back memories. Ammachi stitched all of our daughter's frocks herself, plain cotton, always with pockets. The one fancy shop frock we bought for her first birthday she wore for exactly one photo. Pockets, if you can manage it. The little ones love keeping stones in them 🙂
1on Mother-in-law wants our 4 month old's head shaved so the hair 'comes back thick'
We did our daughter's first haircut at the temple when she was around one, because that's when the elders wanted it. Her hair came back exactly the same as before, which is to say like mine 😄 My amma swore it was thicker. Nobody else could see it.
6on Campus QA job or straight into an M.Sc? Our daughter has to decide before placements start
'Needs it or likes it' is a good way to put it. From what she says, R&D is where she wants to end up, which probably answers the question. I'll show her the thread tonight. She'll read it and then do exactly what she'd already decided, as usual :)
1on The baby has discovered he can shriek, and so have the neighbours downstairs
Ente mol did this at a cousin's wedding, right in the middle of the muhurtham. The whole hall turned round. She's 21 now and refuses to believe us 🙂 It passes. Your uncle downstairs probably had one like that himself.
0on since he was born, half my consultations end with the patient giving me baby advice
And after school it's the relatives. Our daughter is 20 and her valiyamma still sends me tips on getting her to eat breakfast 🙂
6on Daughter's college is selling a paid 'placement readiness' course for the summer. Worth it?
Outside company, going by the circular. A name I've never heard of, with the college logo on top. That's half of why I'm suspicious 😊
