Mothers of toddlers, what fabric do you really want in a frock for a 1 year old?

I stitch from home, mostly blouses, but this season many customers are asking frocks for one year old babies, for birthdays and naming functions. They bring net, sequin cloth, satin with lining. Back zip, big puff sleeves. Looks very nice in photos. But I keep thinking, the baby has to sit in it three hours in this heat. My daughter says ask the mothers directly instead of guessing. So I am asking. What do you want for a small child, and what did you regret buying?

Mine are teenagers now, so I'm going back a few years. The frocks that got worn more than once were cotton or a soft cotton-silk, with buttons at the front or the shoulder, so you could change a nappy without undressing the whole child. Net was fine as an outer layer only. Anything scratchy at the neck or underarm came off within the hour, photographs or not. I would offer customers two versions: one for the photos and one for the rest of the function.

Two versions is a good idea, thank you. Front buttons I can do easily. For the photo one, if I put full cotton lining under the net, is that enough or still it will be hot?

lining helps. our problem was the elastic at the sleeves and waist, it left red marks on our daughter's arms every time. keep it loose or use a tie

This brings back memories. Ammachi stitched all of our daughter's frocks herself, plain cotton, always with pockets. The one fancy shop frock we bought for her first birthday she wore for exactly one photo. Pockets, if you can manage it. The little ones love keeping stones in them 🙂
