Moving our 8 month old from our bed to his own cot. How did the first week go for you?

velvet_tiffin_4897

Our son has slept between us since he came home from the hospital. It worked well enough for the first months. Now he rolls, kicks and wakes whenever either of us turns over, and none of the three of us is sleeping properly. We have a cot. It has been holding laundry. We would like to move him into it, initially in our room. I would like to hear about the process rather than the principle. Did you move him all at once or gradually? Naps first, or nights? How long before it settled?

we never managed it. ours moved out of our bed at 4, on her own, with great ceremony and a new pillow. so i'd say you have time, but you also might be doing this for years.

Ha, same ceremony here, at 5. Though I'd say a cot is much easier at 8 months than at 3 years, when they can climb out and argue with you about it.

      Replying to @sage_drum_6121

can confirm. my baby took to the cot in about a week. the 8 year old still turns up in our bed at 2 am.

Ours is in a bassinet beside the bed and I'm already wondering about the next step. Did you start the cot in your room and then move it to another room later?

This was long ago for us, but what worked was pushing the cot right against our bed with one side down, so she could still see and reach us. Every few days we moved it a little further away. Took about three weeks, with a few bad nights in between. We started with nights, naps followed on their own.

The side-by-side arrangement sounds sensible. Did you have any trouble with the gap between the two mattresses? That is the part I am unsure about.
