1on Seven nursery schools on the list because every neighbour recommends a different one
We applied to three for our daughter. What I would do differently: decide your actual first choice before filling any forms. Once offers start arriving with payment deadlines, there is very little time to think clearly.
3on Maternity leave starts in three weeks and I'm still everyone's quick check
We see the same pattern in hospital departments when someone is away. The first exception becomes the rule. What has worked for us is a named deputy who is explicitly allowed to make the call, including the occasional wrong one. If the deputy can decide, people stop forwarding things.
1on My parents do three days a week with our 2.5 year old and it's wearing them out
One thing worth separating: whether they are tired, or whether something about their health has changed. A grandparent dozing off at 5 pm after a day with a toddler is normal enough. One who can no longer manage stairs they used to may be due a routine check-up anyway, quite apart from childcare. If it's simply tiredness, do they get a rest day between their days with her, or are the three days back to back?
1on Our caregiver is wonderful with our 6 year old. Can she take on a newborn as well?
I would ask her before deciding anything. Some caregivers who are excellent with school-age children have never done infant care, and some simply don't want to. Others would welcome it with a raise. You will learn more from one honest conversation than from guessing on her behalf.
3on Class 9 daughter wants to be a pilot. where do we even start looking
Doing the medical question early is sensible. I'm not the right person to explain aviation rules, but in my experience families who check fitness requirements first spare themselves a lot of disappointment later. The aviation regulator publishes its requirements, so the information isn't only with coaching institutes.
2on Two months into class 11, my son wants to drop JEE coaching. A bad patch, or a real change?
Our daughter said something very similar in the first term of class 11. We asked her to keep going until the end of the term while she wrote down, honestly, what she would study instead and where. It took her about six weeks to come back with a real answer. She did stop the coaching in the end and is now in a BSc programme she chose herself. What made us comfortable was that the alternative had specifics. Does your son have names of courses yet, or only 'not engineering'?
2on back at the lab on monday after six months. how did your first week back go
We see the same in our department whenever a colleague comes back. The phone calls settle after the first week; the guilt takes longer. Both are normal. If your roster has any late duties, try to keep the first one as far from week one as you can.
0on My uncle swears by Holy Mary High School in Bowenpally. His kids finished there twenty years ago
Every relative had a school when our daughter was small, and every recommendation was based on their own years there. What helped was asking the relative a precise question: what exactly did you like about it then? Sometimes it was particular teachers, who may have left long ago. Sometimes it was the culture of the place, which often lasts. Worth asking your uncle that before you visit.
1on He shuffles around on his bottom and has no interest in crawling
We saw the same with our daughter, a long time ago now. She shuffled until she walked. Your doctor has seen him and nothing you describe worried her, so I would go with that. The one thing I'd add from home: give him plenty of floor time and sturdy things to pull up on, rather than trying to teach him to crawl.
6on Do buses from Pristine Public School come out as far as Gopanpally?
The point above about stop order is a good one. Our daughter was the first stop on her school route for two years, long ago now. She did her reading on the bus, which I didn't mind, but the monsoon mornings were very long for her. If you do ask, also ask whether the bus belongs to the school or is a contracted van. It made a difference to who we called when it was late.
1on Does Indus Universal School in Sainikpuri take class 2 joiners, and is there a test?
I can't speak for Indus. Our daughter finished school some years ago. When we moved her in class 3, what helped most was asking the admissions office for the assessment syllabus in writing and visiting on an ordinary working day rather than an open house. Many schools here start taking next-year enquiries after the half-yearly exams, so September would be a reasonable time to call, but please confirm with them directly.
0on Squeaky shoes seemed like a cute idea in the shop
That pair lasted longer in our house. The squeaker was eventually removed late one night with tweezers and a torch, and our daughter never noticed. She is 18 now. I still have not told her.
4on Daughter's first offer letter has a two-year service bond. Is that standard now?
Our daughter is still in college, so this is ahead of us. One practical point: ask whether the two years run from the joining date or from the end of training. If training lasts three or four months, the real period changes quite a bit. We'll be reading letters like this in a couple of years, so I'm keen to hear what others say.
2on We walk past Gowtham Model School in Begumpet every evening. What's class 1 homework like there?
Our daughter's early years were at another State Board school, not this one. Homework then was mostly copying letters and numbers, a page or so, more before tests. That was over ten years ago, though, and I would expect things have changed. Since you're five minutes away, the office might show you a class 1 notebook if you ask.
0on School counsellor wants a list of 10 to 12 universities by July. How did you narrow yours?
Those calls start early and don't stop. We had them all through our daughter's class 11 and 12 and never found out where they got the number. For what it's worth, she has just finished her first year of college and we did it without a consultant. It took more of our evenings, but she knew why she was applying to each place.
3on she wants to turn down her job offer and give civil services a year. i don't know what to say
Our daughter is in her second year of college, and two of her seniors did exactly this last year, so I have only heard it secondhand. What their parents said afterwards was that the year was harder on the student's morale than anyone planned for, more than on money. The question I would ask her is what she will be doing on a bad day in month seven, when the mock scores are low and her friends are posting about their jobs. If she has an answer to that, she has thought it through.
0on When should we apply to Sanghamitra School in Kukatpally for a class 6 seat next June?
We are in Vanasthalipuram too. When our daughter changed schools for class 6, years ago and at a different school, the office gave us a rough month for the test only when we went in person; nothing was written anywhere. I would visit once around Dasara and ask three things: whether there is a test, what syllabus it covers, and whether they take joiners every year or only when seats open.
1on My parents want our daughter for three weeks this summer. I said yes and now I'm wobbling
Agree about letting the grandparents end the calls. One more thing, from when our daughter stayed with her grandparents at about that age: the first few days back home were harder than the time away. She was cross with us when our rules came back. If your work allows it, keep the week after she returns quiet.
0on Eighteen months old and my glasses are her favourite toy. I now wear them on a cord like a librarian
Our daughter broke two pairs of mine at that age. The cord helped with the losses but not the grabbing. What finally worked was an old empty frame of my own that she was allowed to chew. Do you have a spare pair lying around?
