6on Son says he'll write the new school's entrance test badly on purpose
Respect to him for announcing it in advance 😂 More seriously, at 11 a threat like this is usually about wanting a say. When my son was about that age and we moved him to a different coaching batch, we made a deal: he'd give it a proper try, and we'd review it at the end of the term with him in the room. We never needed the review. The point was that it existed.
4on 1 year old feeds herself at home. At daycare she's spoon-fed and 'eats very little'
Turns away from the spoon, clears the plate when she's in charge. That sounds like a kid who knows exactly what she wants 😄 Ours did a version of this with being carried. Might be less of a problem than it feels.
2on 13 year old niece asked me not to tell her parents about a test until she's ready
Speaking as a parent, I'd want to hear it from my son first. But I'd be quietly hurt to find out a week later that his uncle knew. A bad maths mark isn't a crisis, so a short window seems fine. Anything to do with safety would be a different matter entirely.
Up to a point. My son spent most of a year as the permanent goalkeeper for the older boys in our society and never once got to kick the ball. Kids his own age gave him a turn. He still brings it up.
3on 11 year old is suddenly the tallest in class and has started slouching
Opposite problem in our house. Our son was the shortest in his class until about 15. What helped him most was a coach who never mentioned height at all and just treated him as one of the team. Adults remarking on it, even kindly, was what bothered him.
2on School wants class 10 students to stay back till 5 from October. Worth it?
Our son's school did this in class 10. The first month was genuinely useful, revision of weak chapters with the subject teachers. After that it slowly became supervised homework. He came home more tired than taught, to be honest.
0on How much do you prepare a 6 year old for her own student-led conference?
We never had these, all CBSE and marks in our time. But from the teacher's side I'd guess the whole point is to hear what she picks and why. If you prepare her, they'll see your answers, not hers. Just ask her about the cat when you get there. That's probably the best conversation you'll have all term.
1on Gave the 3 year old a lemon slice as a joke. Now she wants one at every meal
Can confirm it doesn't pass 😂 My 17 year old takes a lemon to school in exam weeks. Says sniffing it keeps him awake.
0on A month of homework in the back of our shop
My son once spent a summer holiday at my clinic reception because we had no other option. He came out knowing more drug names than some of my juniors 😂 He was fine. Yours will be too.
1on School has made Wednesday a millet tiffin day. What do your children actually eat?
Ragi dosa with plenty of ghee is what my son finished at that age, nothing else. Foxtail millet upma came back every single time. Also, from experience, the school checks what's packed, not what's eaten.
0on Youngest in her class 1 section by almost a year, and the writing is already a stretch
Our son was one of the youngest all through school. The only year it mattered was class 1, and only for handwriting. I'd mention it to the teacher, though, not as a worry. Just so she reads the slow writing as age and not effort. Teachers have 35 kids and don't always look at birth dates.
0on school guides camp, 2 nights away. she wants to go, i'm the nervous one
Our son's first school camp was at about that age. He came back filthy, sunburnt and asking when the next one was. I spent both nights refreshing the school group for photos 😄 Pack a torch and a cheap watch. They lose everything else.
3on Class 10 starts in two weeks and my son wants to spend them at the phone repair shop downstairs
Good point about the customers' photos, hadn't thought of that. Mine spent the summer before class 10 at a cycle shop near Brookefield. Came back able to fix every bike in our apartment block and his marks were fine. Of course he now charges the neighbours' kids for it.
A colleague went through this last year with her son. Paid the private place, then got the counselling seat. After a long email chain they returned part of it. Not sure that's a policy anywhere, or just persistence.
0on My partner's snoring wakes the baby. Who moves to the other room?
White noise did more for us than any room shuffle. A fan on full and a cheap white noise machine, and the baby slept through things that would wake the building. Our son is 16 now and still can't sleep without a fan 😄
0on On theatre days I eat lunch at 4. Now my 7 year old says she's 'not hungry' at 1
Physician here with exactly the same lunch habits, so no judgement 😄 What worked for us years ago was lunch on a video call on clinic days. Even a banana in front of the camera counted. Our son mostly wanted to see me eat something.
4on A two year old patient checked my teeth after I checked hers
Ours was the same at five. What helped was a dentist who let him press the chair buttons first. By the third visit he was asking to go up and down.
1on My 10 year old repeated a 'joke' about girls at dinner. He didn't understand half of it
What worked with our son was hearing it plainly from an adult man he looked up to: I don't find those jokes funny, and here's why. Is there someone like that in his life, a coach, an uncle, a teacher? Boys that age copy whoever they want to be like.
0on Can I take our toddler to my department for a week while daycare is shut for repairs?
Did this once, years ago, with our son in the doctors' room at the hospital for an afternoon. Lessons: a floor mat, twice the snacks you think, and tape over every plug point. Also, your thesis students will be more relaxed in that meeting than they've ever been. Toddlers are a great equaliser, ha.
3on maths tuition aunty is moving to bangalore in may. find someone now or wait till june?
Bangalore's gain 😄 We changed tutors for our son between class 7 and 8, and the month with nobody did no harm at all. I'd do a trial class or two with someone now, but not lock in a whole year till you see how she copes in June.
