Youngest in her class 1 section by almost a year, and the writing is already a stretch

hazel_river_9708

Found out at orientation that most of her section is close to a year older. She's happy, has friends already. But the writing work in the first week looks like a stretch for her. Do I mention her age to the teacher, or wait for the first PTM?

Ours, the younger one, is also in class 1, somewhere in the middle of his class by age. From what I see at pickup, the gap between the oldest and youngest shows mostly in writing and sitting still, and it narrows a lot by class 3. I'd wait for the first PTM unless she is upset.

narrows by class 3 matches what i saw with mine. he was one of the younger ones and by class 4 nobody, him included, remembered

Our son was one of the youngest all through school. The only year it mattered was class 1, and only for handwriting. I'd mention it to the teacher, though, not as a worry. Just so she reads the slow writing as age and not effort. Teachers have 35 kids and don't always look at birth dates.

Mentioning it lightly is what I would do. With my elder daughter we said nothing in class 1, and the teacher's first remark was about 'attention'. Once we mentioned her age at the PTM, the remarks changed in tone. One sentence early would have saved us a term of worry.

Speaking as a teacher (older students, but the same applies): a short note from a parent early on really helps. We do look at ages, but in the first weeks with a new class it's easy to miss. And she sounds like she's settling in well, which matters most ❤
