4on Son's cricket friends all joined a foundation batch. What is the week like?
Something the brochure didn't mention for us: school and tuition each assume their work comes first, and a foundation class would be a third set of adults with the same assumption. My elder son is 12 and has regular tuition for two subjects. In exam weeks we already have the tutor setting a test on the same day as school. I'd ask how the centre handles school exam weeks before anything else.
1on Damp patch behind the boys' bunk bed after the rains. Who fixes this properly around Puppalaguda?
We haven't done it yet, that's what I'm trying to find out. The painter says two days for the inside. No idea about the outside. Wall-licking is a new worry I didn't need, thank you.
1on How did you get evening calls moved during your child's half-yearly week?
I travel for client demos, so for me it's less about calls and more about being out of the city. What has worked: as soon as the timetable comes, I put the exam dates on my calendar as 'unavailable after 6.30'. I don't give a reason unless someone asks, and when they do, 'family commitment' has always been enough. Anything that genuinely needs me gets moved to a morning.
3on Helping our weekend driver with nursery admission at St.Dominics Savio High School
The documents listed above were the same at both schools my boys applied to. One thing I'd add: ask the office if there's a fee for the form and whether they take cash, so he isn't caught out on the first visit.
0on Class 9 son wants my work-from-home desk every evening. Who gets the quiet room?
We gave our older one the desk and I moved to the dining table with headphones. Two years on, I still haven't got it back. On weekends he 'forgets' to leave it even when he's only watching cricket.
4on Neighbours moving to Mansoorabad asked me about Kakatiya Techno Schools for their younger one
Can't speak for that school. With our younger one in class 2, the length of the day was fine by the second month. What tired him was the bus ride and then homework straight after. Tell them to ask how many pages of writing a class 2 child brings home on a normal day, not 'in primary'.
2on Now that he crawls everywhere, what do you mop the floor with?
With my two we switched to plain water with a little vinegar in the rooms where they played, and kept the regular cleaner for the bathrooms and kitchen. The bigger change was mopping while the younger one napped, so the floor was dry before he was down again. Nobody got ill from a bit of floor dust; I worried more than I needed to.
1on Is roadside bhutta okay for a 2 year old who asks for it every evening?
With both my boys I steamed corn at home and pressed each kernel a little between my fingers until they were closer to 3. The roadside cobs are often charred and quite chewy, which worried me more than the kernel itself. Making sure they were sitting down while eating helped more than anything else.
3on How early do families start asking about nursery at St. Marks High School, Marredpally?
Not ridiculous. With our younger one we started asking around about 14 months before the nursery year, and that felt right: early enough to know when forms come out, not so early that the information goes stale. Every school runs it differently, so a call to the office around the time this year's forms are out will tell you their pattern.
2on Told my grandson I once climbed a roof for a cricket ball. His parents now hear about it daily
My father told our boys he once failed a maths exam. The younger one now says 'Thatha failed and he's fine' whenever homework comes up. We didn't edit the story, but we started adding the second half, about what he did after that. The six year old is much less interested in that part.
1on Will speaking mostly Kannada at home matter when our son goes for nursery admission?
Our boys spoke mostly Telugu at home till they were three. At both their nursery interactions the teachers spoke to them in whatever they answered in, and one teacher asked my younger son to name colours in Telugu when he went quiet. I wouldn't switch your home language. He'll pick up English at daycare and school faster than you expect.
Lovely. Our 11 year old would cycle at 6 am only if it ended at a tiffin centre. Is there a breakfast stop on your loop? That's what has kept ours going on weekends.
0on son got 'most improved' at the year-end assembly and heard 'you were bad before'
My older one got exactly this in class 4, for English. What helped a little was putting his notebook from June next to the one from March. He could see the difference himself, without anyone being ranked. He still calls it the 'pity certificate', but he kept it.
1on Hindi or Telugu from class 6? Our son reads Hindi better, and his grandparents are not pleased
That's my partner's argument too, almost word for word, and the board year worries me as well. I'm still stuck on how much the grandparents' feelings should count.
