son got 'most improved' at the year-end assembly and heard 'you were bad before'

the school gave out small certificates at the end of term. his said most improved in maths. we were pleased and i said so at dinner. he went quiet, and later told his grandmother it means everyone knew he was bad at it. i didn't know what to say to that. still don't really. it's been a few weeks and the certificate is face down in a drawer.

My older one got exactly this in class 4, for English. What helped a little was putting his notebook from June next to the one from March. He could see the difference himself, without anyone being ranked. He still calls it the 'pity certificate', but he kept it.

Arre, poor fellow. Did he say who 'everyone' is? Sometimes it's one friend who teased him and the whole feeling comes from there.

or nobody said anything and he worked it out himself. kids that age are very good at hearing what an adult didn't say.
