Is roadside bhutta okay for a 2 year old who asks for it every evening?

There's a corn cart at the corner on our evening walk, and since the rains started our son knows exactly where it is. He points, says 'bhutta' very clearly (one of his clearest words, naturally), and we either buy one or deal with the meltdown. So far I've been taking the kernels off and giving him a few at a time, no lemon or chilli. My amma says whole kernels are a choking risk and I should wait till he's older. My partner says he's been eating rice and dal with his hands for a year and corn is no different. What did you do about corn at this age? Roadside, or only at home?

we grew corn on the terrace one year. got exactly three cobs. my son was about that age and ate the kernels off with his front teeth like a rabbit. no advice really, just that it was the best thing that garden ever produced

With both my boys I steamed corn at home and pressed each kernel a little between my fingers until they were closer to 3. The roadside cobs are often charred and quite chewy, which worried me more than the kernel itself. Making sure they were sitting down while eating helped more than anything else.

  • Same story with my little one! We do corn at home now, boiled, little butter, no karam, and my elder one (13) serves it in paper cones so it feels like the cart. Works most days 🙂

My daughter is 4 and still I take out the kernels for her. Back home in UP my mother says in rainy season bhutta is a must, but small kids only with someone watching. My son is 1 so he only gets to hold the empty cob. He is very happy with that.

  • fwiw it comes out exactly the way it went in. don't panic at the next nappy change 🤷
