My 10 year old explained the heart to her class using our overhead tank. She learnt it from the plumber

sage_sketch_7078

Her teacher stopped me at pickup to say my daughter had given the best explanation of the heart in the class: the tank on the roof, the motor that pushes the water up, the pipes going to every room, and a valve 'so it doesn't all come back down'. The teacher assumed I'd coached her, since I'm a cardiologist. I hadn't. Last month our motor broke and she spent an hour following the plumber around asking questions. Twenty years of training, and the plumber got there first.

This is great. My 2 yr old thinks the washing machine is breathing, so we're a long way from valves.

That is a genuinely good model, and it will stay with her far longer than a textbook diagram. The plumber deserves a proper thank-you.

Our son explained electricity to his class using the inverter and the power cuts. Children seem to learn most from whatever has broken at home.

The best teachers are often the ones who let a child follow them around. Do tell the plumber. It will make his week.

Ha! Everything my grandson knows about rain comes from the man who cleans our water tank. He still trusts him over the textbook.

speaking as a vice principal, we'd happily invite your plumber to the science fair. this is exactly the kind of answer we hope for

This made my evening. As a primary teacher, the tank-and-motor answers are the ones I still remember years later. Please tell her a teacher somewhere loved it ♥
