'I already have three friends, I don't need more,' says our 4 year old

ivory_pigeon_278

Our son is 4. At daycare he has the same three friends every day and they're inseparable, which is lovely. The trouble showed up at a birthday party last weekend where he didn't know anyone. He stood next to me for two hours and when I suggested joining the other kids, he told me very seriously that he already has three friends and doesn't need more. I'm not trying to sign him up for classes to fix this. Weekends are already short with my early calls. I just want him a bit more used to children he doesn't know. Did your child go through this, and did anything casual help?

At four, this is very common. My younger one is 3 and his whole world is two kids at daycare. With my elder son, what helped was one fixed thing: the same park at the same time every Sunday morning. Same faces most weeks, and new ones joined slowly. No class, no arranging.

Kids that age with a tight little group are usually fine, and I say that as a primary teacher. The ones I'd watch are the ones who don't have anyone. Is he upset in a new group, or just not interested?

"Doesn't need any more" made me laugh. Sounds like a man with his life sorted 😄 Mine's only 1, so no wisdom from me on the friends part.

My daughter was exactly like this at four, and at 16 she's still close to two of those same three girls. She did learn to talk to new people eventually, mostly through things she liked doing rather than through us arranging anything.

we had a phase where she'd only play with her cousin. didn't push it. it eased when her section changed in school
