  • 0on Try for LKG at Obul Reddy Public School next year, or wait for class 1?

The worry I'd have is the double change. New house and new school in the same June is a lot for a 4 year old, though they do cope. Whichever entry you go for, ask the office directly what the intake is at that level. Parents' guesses on this tend to be a year or two out of date.

  • 1on Nursery at St. Peter's in Dulapally, if we end up renting on the Kompally side next year

I work in school admin, though not at this one: Nursery enquiries at most schools quietly start before the official dates, so a phone call in October or November does no harm. Ask whether the 'interaction' is with the child or with you. At ours it was mostly the parents. And ask to see the nursery room, not only the reception ❤️

  • 3on I assess children for a living, and I've started doing it to my own baby

I did this to my son's reading for years. Occupational habit of a school administrator. What finally helped was a rule I made for myself: at work I could observe, at home I was only allowed to notice things I could enjoy. It took me far longer to stick to it than I'd like to admit ♥

  • 0on Class 11 son took four sciences to keep every door open. Six weeks in, he's sinking

From the school side, 'for safety' is the reason we hear most often at class 11 admission, and the reason behind most change requests by August. In the schools I know, a change in the first term is usually possible if the timetable can absorb it. After that it gets harder. Worth asking early, not after the half-yearly.

  • 3on A school we applied to in March has a class 6 seat for our son now. Move him six weeks into the term?

From the school office side: seats do come up in July, usually because a family has relocated, and the school will want a quick answer because there is often someone else waiting. Ask for the textbook list and what the class has covered so far. Six weeks is roughly one chapter per subject, very manageable. What usually takes longer is the friendships. Ask whether he would be the only new boy in the section. ❤️

  • 2on Home from an evening shift to half a biscuit my 3 year old had saved for my dinner

My son once kept a toffee for me in his school bag for a whole week, when he was about four. It was not really edible by the time it reached me. I ate it anyway ❤

  • 0on Would St. Rita High School's holidays line up with mine? I teach at another CBSE school

I work in school administration (not at St. Rita), so only a general note. CBSE doesn't fix holiday dates for schools. The long breaks tend to fall in the same weeks across the city, but exam weeks, PTMs and the odd local holiday vary a lot, even between two schools on the same road. The most useful thing is to ask the office for last year's printed calendar and lay it next to your own school's. Ten minutes with the two side by side will answer most of this.

  • 1on A month of my mother's hot breakfasts, and now cereal is 'not breakfast'

My son was like this after every summer at his grandparents'. It wasn't really about the food. It was being made something every morning by someone who had the time. We kept one proper breakfast for Saturdays and let weekdays be simple. He still asks for Saturday dosas at 20 ❤️

  • 1on Small paddling tub on the balcony for a 1 year old in this heat. Good idea or a worry?

For our son it was always after four, when the sun had moved off the floor. Before that the tiles around the tub were too hot for small feet even if the water was fine. That was years ago, but the sun hasn't changed much.

  • 0on Daughter wants to move to a 'dummy' school for class 12 to focus on coaching

I'm in school administration myself, for what it's worth. Attendance rules apply on paper, and schools are expected to keep proper records. How a particular school handles that is between them and the board, and I would not rely on anyone's assurance that 'it's all fine'. Practicals and internal assessment still happen at the school, so she would need to be there for those whatever the arrangement.

  • 0on Number 9 on the LKG waiting list at the school we want. The other one wants our answer by Friday

That's the right question. From the school side, refund terms are usually in the admission letter or the fee circular, and most parents don't read them until it's too late. Ask for them in writing. Also, a polite 'we're waiting on one more school, could you hold the seat till Monday' is asked more often than you'd think, and sometimes the answer is yes ❤️

  • 0on 8 year old says she's too big to be looked after by her brother's nanny

Speaking as someone who works in a school: children that age respond far better to a routine they helped write than to an adult reminding them. Put homework and screen time on paper with her, and let her sign it. Then didi isn't the one saying no. The paper is.
