2on Our caregiver keeps asking which comes first, school homework or the tuition sheets
I'm the person in your chechi's position two afternoons a week, with my granddaughter. Her parents decide, but I'm the one sitting there at 5 pm. What helped me was a note in her bag from her parents, saying the order for that day. I didn't want to decide. I wanted to be told, so that when the tuition teacher asks, it isn't my choice she's questioning haha
0on How long is the LKG day at Elate International, and do 4 year olds manage it?
We don't know Elate, but our granddaughter started a full day at about this age at her school and the first two months were hard. Asleep at the dinner table most evenings 😄 Worth asking them directly whether the little ones get a quiet or rest period, and what happens with a child who simply falls asleep anyway.
1on What do you send in the daycare food box for an 8 month old?
Grandmother here. When my granddaughter was in daycare we sent ragi porridge in a small insulated flask, still warm at lunch, and she ate it better than anything cold. Her parents didn't believe it would work, haha. On the rice sitting out, if you're unsure, ask your paediatrician rather than this group.
0on Daycare lunch for a 10 month old. How do you keep it edible till 12.30?
Packing it cool is right. Cooked rice sitting lukewarm for four hours is the one I'd avoid. For my granddaughter's school box we still do cool food plus a flask. She says it's boring, which I take as a good sign.
0on What do you cook for a 9 month old when you can barely cook?
Moong dal, rice and one vegetable in the cooker together. Carrot, pumpkin, bottle gourd, whatever is in the fridge. Mash it, add a little ghee. That one dish covered half of my granddaughter's meals at that age, with variety from the vegetable alone. Salt and anything else, follow what your doctor says. Ours were particular about it.
1on Festival visitors keep scooping up our toddler and she screams the house down
As the grandmother in this situation in my own family, I can tell you we mostly don't notice we're doing it! Say it lightly at the door: 'she warms up in ten minutes, then she's all yours.' Most of us will happily wait if we're promised a turn. The ones who won't wait will get screamed at and learn on their own 😄
4on Moving from Noida to Hyderabad in December. How do I tell my 9 year old?
We moved my son across the country when he was about that age, a long time ago now. We told him early and I'm glad we did. Children hear everything, and a secret makes it feel like bad news. What helped him was having something concrete to look forward to. We showed him photos of the new place and let him choose the colour for his room. A small thing, but it was his.
1on Which classes does Mahesh Vidya Bhavan in Mailardevpally start from?
I don't know this school myself, we're on the Bandlaguda side and my granddaughter's school is elsewhere. But when my children were small, the only reliable answers on class ranges came from walking into the office. Websites were always one year behind 😄 Go on a weekday morning, and ask them about the bus routes too while you're there. Whether the bus covers your new colony matters more than anything else at class 1.
1on Toy library or toy rental anywhere near Madhapur?
Grandmother's view: a steel tumbler, two spoons and a cardboard box kept my granddaughter busier than anything we ever bought 😄
0on Toddler keeps food in her cheeks and walks around with it for half an hour
Grandmother and still a part-time physician, so take this as one of each 😄 My granddaughter did exactly this. Usually it meant she was full and too busy playing to say so. Smaller portions, and letting her get down once she stopped chewing, sorted it in a few weeks. If choking worries you, mention it at the next paediatrician visit and let them watch her eat.
My granddaughter's school has only a small ground. Her teachers walk the class to a park nearby once a week, and she's perfectly happy and runs about plenty. A big ground is a bonus. I wouldn't move children for it alone.
1on she eats everything for the nanny and almost nothing when i'm home
In our house I'm more or less the nanny in this story. My granddaughter eats beautifully for me and plays with her food for her mother, who once asked me what the secret was. No secret. Same plate, same chair, same time, and I'm quite boring at the table. Children save the drama for the person they've missed. Don't take it to heart.
2on One birthday party with a noodle station and now she eats everything with chopsticks
My granddaughter did the same with a fork, for idli of all things. Her grandfather tried to reason with her. I told him to leave it, she was eating, wasn't she? It lasted about a month 😄
Found the actual tin this morning, clearing the same cupboard. Still half full, thirty-odd years on. It has gone to the bin.
Ours too! The photographer at her first birthday asked if we could wipe some of it off.
1on Grandson wants to hold the neighbours' new baby every evening
The pillow routine is a good one. I'd add a time limit. Little arms tire faster than they admit, and a seven year old will hold on long after he should have handed her back, out of pride. Two or three minutes, then she goes back to an adult and he gets another turn tomorrow.
2on Our one year old cries at every new face, and we have no family nearby to practise on
Crying at strangers around that age is very common, I've said that to a lot of parents over the years. My granddaughter screamed at me for two months, and I'm her grandmother! She's 6 now and won't stop talking to me 😄 If she's happy with you and the nanny, she's attached to the right people. The rest comes.
0on KG day at Ananda Jyothi High School, Amberpet? We may rent on that side next year
One thing to check first. The school is listed with both CBSE and State Board. At some schools that means two separate streams from class 1, so ask which one the nursery leads into.
2on Our daughter likes exams. Would the IB side or the CBSE side at Oakridge Gachibowli suit her better?
My granddaughter is only in class 1, so I can't speak to either side there. But a small correction to 'IB is better for kids like her'. In my own family we had one child who needed marks to feel steady and one who didn't care either way, and the one who loved tests did very well because of them. Liking exams isn't a problem that needs fixing 😄
