2on she's 14 and the career changes every month. forensic science this week
I'd look less at the job titles and more at what keeps coming back. Architecture, psychology and forensics all have a 'figure out how something works' thread running through them. Our daughter's interests don't match the engineering plan everyone at home assumed, and it helped to stop debating titles and just ask which subjects she enjoys doing homework for. The stream choice comes from that, more than from the career of the month.
0on Class 9 ICSE History and Civics is mostly dates and articles. How do your kids get through it?
Different board for us, my daughter's CBSE, but it was the same problem in class 9 social. What finally helped was making her own timeline on one long sheet and sticking it on the cupboard. Dates stopped being separate facts and became a sequence. Flashcards for the rest.
1on Daughter made a slide deck to argue for humanities in class 11
careers slide was there. law, journalism, policy research. Some of it clearly came from videos, but she'd also emailed a cousin who did a humanities degree and quoted her. That part was solid
2on Dance class showcase rehearsal. She has perfected the bow and nothing else
the bow is the important bit tbh. mine spent her first show at that age waving at us from the stage the whole time, didn't do a single step 🤷
Five or six years before we get to this. Already noting the faculty letter part.
0on Neighbours' toddlers play in front of our flat every evening. Which plants should go?
tulsi is fine, half our building's garden is tulsi and the kids just pull the leaves off for fun. agree on the berries. maybe ask the parents to keep an eye too, it's a shared space after all 🤷
2on Class 11 daughter has decided on law. Does CLAT coaching really start this early?
Two years behind you here: our 14 year old keeps saying humanities. Good to see a class 11 kid picking it with a plan.
2on Daycare is 600 m from home, and every pickup she refuses to leave
We had this. What worked was a fixed goodbye: she got to say bye to one thing, the swing, and then we left. A week of protest and then that was simply how it went. It also helped to tell her at the door, before she'd started playing again, what the goodbye would be.
1on Daughter has decided on CA after one video. What does the work look like on an ordinary day?
Ours wanted to be a lawyer after a courtroom series. Then a marine biologist. Something new every few weeks for the past eight months 🤷 Not saying CA won't stick, just don't buy any books yet.
4on Daughter joins her first job in Hyderabad next month. Where do new joiners usually live?
Most of the younger people on my teams live in Gachibowli, Kondapur, Madhapur or around Nanakramguda, close enough to dodge the worst of the evening traffic. I'd go temporary first. A couple of weeks in a company guest house or a serviced flat, then look at places on a weekday around 7 pm so they see the street when it's busy.
1on Our teenage son plays Sunday ultimate frisbee with a group of adults. Overthinking it?
If you've watched once and it felt fine, you've done more than most of us would. Our daughter's badminton group is mixed ages too. The breakfast is where the friendships happen, for better or worse 🤷
0on Our baby's doctor explains everything very fast, and I understand only half
Write your questions on your phone before you go, in whatever language is easiest for you, and read them out one by one. Our daughter is a teenager now, but I still remember walking out of those visits having forgotten half of what I meant to ask. Doctors are used to lists.
