Son wants commerce with maths in class 11, and I can't tell him where it leads

My son is in class 10 and has told us he wants commerce with maths next year. He watches economics videos, follows the markets with two of his friends, and says he'd like to do something with numbers that isn't engineering. I'm a doctor. Everyone in the family assumed science, and to be fair, so did I. I don't want to argue for biology just because it's the only route I understand. But I can't tell him what commerce with maths leads to beyond 'CA' and 'B.Com', which I'm fairly sure is not the whole picture. What did your kids go on to do after commerce with maths? And is there anything at 15 that's hard to undo if he picks this and changes his mind later?

Speaking from the coordinator side: the subject choice at 11 that's hardest to undo is dropping maths, not picking commerce. With maths in the combination he keeps economics, statistics, data courses and most of the management routes open. Without it, far fewer. So the combination he's asking for is actually one of the more flexible ones :)

What does 'something with numbers' mean to him? Economics, finance and data go in quite different directions after school. I'd get him to name two or three courses he would apply to before anyone decides on the stream.

Fair point. When I asked him last night he said economics, and then 'maybe something with data'. Not a firm list yet, but not nothing either.

Teaching in a CBSE school, I see this choice every year. Commerce with maths students from our school have gone into economics, BBA, CA, actuarial studies, a few into analytics. The ones who struggled had mostly picked it to escape science. Yours seems to be choosing it for its own sake. That's a good sign.

same picture at the university where i teach. plenty of the economics students came in through commerce with maths. the maths is the part they're glad they kept

doctor here too. the pull towards biology is real, my parents still ask why my son isn't 'preparing' for anything. he's 12. letting him pick is the right instinct
