The geography chapter turned into a map-app argument

sage_quilt_5474

My child tried to check a textbook map against a phone map and discovered different labels and scales. Now homework is about which map is 'right'. How do you help a student understand that different maps serve different purposes without doing the explanation for them?

Scale and date matter; those questions can guide the investigation.

I can ask my child what each map was designed to show.

A road map and a physical geography map answer different questions. Comparing their purpose first could make the mismatch interesting.

Ask what each map is trying to show before comparing details.

I'll ask them to identify the purpose first instead of picking a winner.
